About the Role

Lynden Transport is a trusted leader in shipping freight to, from, and within Alaska since 1954. We are looking for motivated, talented, and career-oriented Local Drivers to drive tractor and trailer combinations or straight trucks to transport cargo freight. This role may include picking up, loading, unloading, and delivering cargo freight.

Responsibilities

  • Drives vehicle to specified destinations in accordance with company procedures and governmental regulations.
  • Applies knowledge of commercial driving and skills in maneuvering vehicles at varying speeds and in difficult situations, such as heavy traffic, inclement weather, or tight loading/unloading dock areas.
  • Maintains telephone or radio contact with dispatcher to receive pick-up or delivery instructions.
  • Loads and unloads trailers, either individually or with assistance from dock workers, with or without mechanical freight-handling equipment.
  • Ensures load security using cargo straps, tarps, ropes, chains, lumber, and other tools.
  • Performs lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying of freight as needed.
  • Hooks and unhooks trailers from tractors or converter dollies.
  • Inspects tractor or truck for defects before, during, and after trips; submits reports indicating vehicle condition.
  • Notes the condition of equipment such as tires, lights, brakes, fuel, oil, and water.
  • Installs and removes tire chains as required by weather conditions.
  • Ensures all shipping documents (manifest, bills of lading, delivery receipts, hazardous material placarding, etc.) are available and complete.
  • Performs duties in compliance with company policies, procedures, and all Federal, State, and local regulations for safe operation of a commercial motor vehicle.
  • Maintains required records, including driver logs, vehicle inspections, and other reports.
  • Reports safety hazards, accidents (vehicular and/or cargo), or on-the-job injuries immediately to the on-duty supervisor.
  • Dependable and consistent attendance is required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Current, valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class A) with hazardous materials endorsement; doubles endorsement may be required.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as hazardous materials shipping regulations, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to present information and respond to questions from managers, customers, and the public.
  • Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age with a good driving record.
  • Must be willing to work in the warehouse and yard with minimal driving time to start.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods.
  • Must be able to reach overhead.
  • Must be able to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls for extended periods.
  • Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl to examine equipment and cargo.
  • Must be able to install and remove 60-pound tire chains as required by weather conditions.
  • Must be able to push or pull freight up to 4,000 pounds using a pallet jack.
  • May be required to reposition (push or pull) a 3,500-pound dolly on uneven surfaces while hooking a set of trailers.

Work Environment

  • Regularly works in outside weather conditions.
  • May work near moving mechanical parts and be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and vibration.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
