Local College Co-op - Analytical Science R&D

About the role

This position is open to qualified and highly committed college students enrolled in a fully accredited college or university located close to the Midland and Auburn Dow sites. It is a long-term, year-round, undergraduate student position -- at least one full year in duration -- while the student is simultaneously taking classes toward an undergraduate degree.

Responsibilities

• Works as part of a team in a laboratory supporting chemists and engineers in characterizing materials by preparing samples and utilizing analytical instruments such as Gas Chromatography (GC), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Rheology, Injection molding, mechanical analysis and other analytical methods.
• Manages and then safely executes laboratory work requests, maintaining and running relevant laboratory apparatus and testing equipment and documenting data.
• Accurately and reliably records readings and observations using relevant equipment and instruments, understanding how assigned duties integrate with others in the team.
• Maintains inventories of consumable materials, chemicals, and supplies related to activities by anticipating usage rates, order lead times, and ordering/purchasing procedures, impacting the accuracy of own work.
• Promptly and effectively communicates issues to Technology Leader or lead scientists to enable or accelerate problem resolution.
• Actively participate in work group team meetings to address safety, process improvement, problem solving, and other work group, department, and functional topics.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• High school diploma/GED and already enrolled at an accredited college or university located close to the Midland and Auburn Dow sites, pursuing an undergraduate degree.
• Successfully complete a minimum of 6 credit hours per term during both the Fall and Winter terms (Sept-Apr).
• Able to begin work very soon, usually within 4-6 weeks of the job offer, and work year-round at least 16 hours each week ONLY during our regular business hours (8am-5pm, Mon-Fri... max 8 hours/day and 30/week during school).
• Commit to the role for at least 1 full calendar year (BEFORE completing classes for your stated undergraduate degree or BEFORE transferring out of the area).
• Students available longer than one year before completing their degree program are preferred and advantaged.
• Reliable attendance and punctuality in commuting to work daily or at least 2 days a week; therefore, dependable transportation, dedication and time management skills are absolutely required.
• Since this is a Local Co-op position, candidates must live within 50 miles of the Dow site to which they are applying.
• A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.
