About the role
As a driver at Gunther Salt, you will safely and efficiently operate commercial motor vehicles to transport freight to customers. Deliveries are local and regional, with shifts ending at the plant. You will also serve as the face of Gunther Salt, communicating effectively with customers to ensure satisfaction.
Responsibilities
- Transport bulk or packaged materials by truck with a pneumatic tank to make on-time deliveries.
- Drive to specified destinations while complying with commercial driving regulations and road safety laws.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip equipment inspections, reporting any defects to management.
- Follow company procedures for safely loading and unloading freight, including operating an industrial powered forklift.
- Verify loads against shipping papers and complete all administrative and recordkeeping requirements.
- Perform warehouse duties when not driving, such as loading and unloading freight in varying weather conditions.
- Take and verify dispatch instructions, maintain contact with supervisors, and follow delivery instructions.
- Drop and hook trailers, connect air hoses and electrical lines, and perform equipment configuration changes.
- Maintain truck electronic logging device (ELD) logs according to state and federal regulations.
Requirements
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with no Automatic Restriction.
- Minimum of one year of tractor-trailer driving experience OR graduation from a recognized CDL training program.
- Must qualify to be insurable as a CDL driver.
- Experience with pneumatic tanks preferred.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English sufficiently for communication, understanding traffic signs, and completing logs.
- Must meet Department of Transportation (DOT) licensing and physical requirements.
- Ability to operate industrial powered forklift, electric powered pallet jack, manual pallet jack, and other loading equipment.
Work Environment
Work may be performed inside and outside plant buildings in hot, humid, wet, dusty, cool, and cold environments.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, sit, walk, and maintain balance for extensive periods.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to climb ladders on tractors/trailers and frequently enter/exit the tractor cab.
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks, including stretching, turning, twisting, reaching overhead, bending, crouching, squatting, kneeling, and stooping.
- Wear required PPE, including hard hat, gloves, hearing protection, safety shoes, protective eyewear, and long pants/sleeved shirts.
