About the Role

For over a century, we’ve served the health care needs of the people of Memphis and the Mid-South. The Phlebotomist is responsible for drawing venous, arterial, and micro blood specimens from inpatients and outpatients, transporting specimens and test requests to the laboratory, and returning completed test results to patient areas. The incumbent performs standard laboratory venipuncture procedures for assigned patients and models appropriate behavior as exemplified in our Mission, Vision, and Values.

Responsibilities

• Performs standard venipuncture procedures within acceptable limits.
• Demonstrates accuracy and precision in performing procedures.
• Promotes effective customer relations and a positive work environment.
• Maintains an organized and neat workspace.
• Demonstrates conscientiousness about materials and care of equipment.
• Maintains organization, accuracy, and precision in stressful circumstances.
• Promotes professional practice among laboratory associates.
• Recognizes and reacts appropriately to environmental safety factors related to patient care.
• Coordinates patient care or department-related communications among lab associates.
• Participates in quality monitoring and evaluation to meet hospital, DNV, and other quality standards.

• Understands, applies, and supports departmental/hospital policies, procedures, and standards.
• Adheres to the laboratory dress code policy.
• Demonstrates adaptability and willingness to change.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required).
• Technical Degree or Diploma in Phlebotomy (Required).
• No prior work experience (Preferred).

Skills

• Skilled in performing venipuncture and arterial punctures.
• Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations.
• Ability to read and follow written instructions.
• Ability to communicate verbally with associates, patients, and physicians.
• Ability to organize tasks and maintain control of workflow.

Physical Demands

• Invasive and non-invasive patient contact throughout the shift.
• Exposure to patient body fluids.
• Ability to react quickly in emergency situations.
• Must be able to read, write, and communicate orally with others.
• Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 25 lbs. periodically throughout the shift.
• Must be able to stand, walk, climb stairs, sit in one place, squat, and kneel periodically throughout the shift.
• Must be able to reach, bend, and twist periodically throughout the shift.
• Good balance, coordination, and hand-eye coordination required.
• Use of hands for gripping, squeezing, and repetitive hand-to-wrist motion.
• Normal eye-motor coordination, manual dexterity, and visual perception.
