Job Title: R&D Tech Engineer (Linux & Infrastructure) Location: St. Paul, MN 55117 Duration: 03 Months Position Overview We are seeking an experienced R&D Tech Engineer to support, maintain, and optimize our on-premises infrastructure and development environments. In this role, you will bring deep Linux system administration expertise, strong technical documentation skills, and a reliability-first mindset. You will work closely with cross-functional teams including Application Development, Cybersecurity, Networking, and Operations to elevate platform resilience, improve deployment efficiency, and ensure robust product reliability. Key Responsibilities System Administration & Maintenance: Perform Linux OS provisioning, patching, upgrades, kernel updates, and complete lifecycle management.Architecture & Documentation: Create and maintain detailed technical documentation, including dependency, data-flow, and sequence diagrams.Monitoring & Observability: Implement, manage, and optimize infrastructure monitoring using Syslog, Splunk, and ELK stack.Storage & Network Administration: Manage network filers, including NFSv4 and Kerberos-based Access Control Lists (ACLs) for shared file storage.Virtualization: Deploy, configure, and maintain enterprise virtualization environments, including Proxmox and Red Hat virt-who.Database & Backup Operations: Ensure system resilience through consistent database configuration, maintenance, and backup management.Security & Compliance: Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to enforce security baselines, address risks, and support compliance and governance audits.Incident Management: Participate in an on-call rotation to rapidly respond to infrastructure-related incidents and service disruptions. Qualifications & Requirements Required Technical Skills (Minimum 3 required) High-level proficiency in Linux OS administration (provisioning, patching, kernel updates, lifecycle management).Hands-on experience creating architecture artifacts (Data-flow, Sequence, and Dependency diagrams).Experience configuring and maintaining monitoring solutions (Syslog, Splunk, ELK).Strong knowledge of network storage protocols, specifically NFSv4 and Kerberos-based ACLs.Experience with database backup procedures and configuration management.Enterprise virtualization experience using Proxmox and Red Hat virt-who. Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills Hands-on experience with telemetry tools (Nagios, Zabbix, Grafana) to create dashboards, alerts, and operational runbooks.Cross-platform storage integration (CIFS/SMB) and network folder mounting across Windows and Linux environments.Deep understanding of core networking services (DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP) and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) administration.Virtualization engineering techniques such as GPU passthrough for virtualized workloads.Experience with Version Control Systems (Perforce, Git). Soft Skills Clear written and verbal communication, with strong emphasis on visual and written technical documentation.Continuous improvement mindset focused on root-cause analysis and automated remediation.Methodical approach to following operational procedures, logging steps, and validating solutions.Highly collaborative team player with effective interpersonal skills. Education & Experience Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).
