Responsibilities
This is skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of communication lines, electrical lines, and related equipment. Duties include:
- Installing, maintaining, and repairing traffic and pedestrian fixtures, push buttons, park lamps, island lights, illuminating signs, loop detectors, communication, and video cable networks.
- Performing work in the immediate area of primary circuits, trolley feeders, and other high-voltage wiring.
Requirements
Education
- Graduation from high school or equivalent (G.E.D.).
Experience
- One year of experience in the repair or maintenance of electrical or communications systems.
License Requirements
- Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment and maintain it as a condition of continued employment.
- Must obtain an Ohio Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) within 90 days of appointment.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid Ohio Class A Commercial Driver’s License (C.D.L.), including air brake qualification and any other required endorsements, within 150 days of appointment.
- Out-of-state residents must obtain equivalent licenses from their state of residence within the same 150-day period.
Promotional Qualifications
- Must be a full-time or part-time permanent employee in pay grade 123 (Wage) or below, pay grade 29 (Clerical) or below, or equivalent.
- Must have been employed for 6 consecutive months by the City of Dayton in a classified Civil Service position.
- Identical scores will be broken by (1) seniority and (2) random selection.
Open Competitive Applicants
- Final appointment is contingent upon passing a job-related medical examination and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity.

Skills
- Considerable knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in communication and power line construction and maintenance.
- Considerable knowledge of the elementary principles of electric theory as applied to communication and electric transmission lines.
- Working knowledge of safety precautions in electric and communication line construction and maintenance.
- Ability to learn and observe proper safety precautions.
- Good physical condition and health sufficient to perform tasks requiring strength and agility at heights and under varying weather conditions.

- Applicants on the Promotional eligible list will be considered for appointment before those on the Open Competitive list.

Background Check
- A background investigation is required prior to employment, including for current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, or demotion into a classified position.
Drug and Nicotine Testing
- Final appointment is contingent upon passing a drug screen.
- New hires must pass a nicotine screening and remain tobacco and nicotine-free as a condition of continued employment. This policy does not apply to current City employees.
