About the Role

This position is with FirstEnergy Pennsylvania Electric Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp, located in Cranberry, PA. All Journey Line Worker classifications and the associated line of progression are represented by UWUA Local 140. This is a DOT-covered classification subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening. Open positions are predominantly in Pennsylvania, with additional locations possible based on business needs.

Journey Line Workers build and maintain electric power systems and restore service to customers. Work is predominantly outdoors in all weather conditions. Linemen must be able to drive safely, work extended hours, travel or transfer to new headquarters upon request, and wear company-provided Personal Protective Equipment.

Responsibilities

• Travel to various job locations within the assigned region.
• Review job work requirements and provide input regarding daily tasks.
• Load and unload tools, materials, and supplies at crew headquarters and job sites.
• Lift, pull, and carry insulators, cross-arms, equipment, tools, grounds, dampers, and other materials to and from job sites.
• Load and unload tools, materials, and equipment while standing on elevated structures such as wood poles and insulated work platforms.
• Climb poles using boot hooks or aerial lifts.
• Test, frame, set, and/or anchor poles; string electric power lines and install cross-arms.
• Perform substation switching; install and replace switches, circuit protection equipment, insulators, meters, and streetlights.
• Hang and energize transformers; take voltage readings.
• Troubleshoot problems and determine repair needs on primary and secondary overhead or underground dead legs.
• Use hand and power tools; dig holes by hand for pole installation; climb ladders, poles, embankments, and towers; work at heights above 35 feet; set grounds; work with live circuits; and work in trenches, manholes, and confined spaces.
• Set and install underground structures; locate, pull, remove, splice, or terminate cables.
• Install and replace equipment, meters, and streetlights.
• Operate hydraulic equipment including drills, boom trucks, diggers, pole tampers, hydraulic jacks, and bucket trucks once certified.
• Operate lift equipment such as aerial lifts and line truck booms.
• Operate forklifts to load and unload work materials and supplies.
• Travel by vehicle, motorboat, or off-road utility vehicle (OUV) to access job sites.
• Drive Class A vehicles (e.g., bucket trucks and line trucks) to and from job sites.
• Drive company pickup trucks or passenger vehicles to job sites, meetings, training, vendor locations, and to pick up or deliver supplies.
• Conduct daily vehicle inspections.
• Provide back-up relief for foreman in their temporary absence; direct work to other crew members and act as a leader.
• Attend all mandated OSHA and company training.
• Provide on-the-job training, orientation, demonstration, and assistance to apprentice linemen.

Requirements

• Completion of a federal or state-sanctioned line worker apprenticeship with approved supporting documentation (e.g., IBEW Journeyman Lineman A Ticket) and/or a union or union-affiliated sponsored line worker apprenticeship.
• Journey-level Line Worker with at least 2 years of hands-on experience with an electric utility or utility lines construction contractor.
• Valid Class A CDL License by the first day of employment.
• Passed a DMV medical exam by the first day of employment.
• At least 18 years of age.
• High School diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience.
• Ability to wear company-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
• Ability to work and drive in all types of weather and road conditions.
• Capable of working extended hours, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• If hired as Provisional, must complete the provisional training plan within one year from the hire date.
• Must pass pre-employment requirements: drug screen, background check, Post Offer Physical (POPA).
• Experienced in rubber gloving and hot stick procedures.
• Experience in transmission and distribution work, underground, and numerous voltages.
• Effective team player with strong communication skills.

FirstEnergy Employees: You must have qualified on all prerequisite tests prior to submitting an application and all secondary tests prior to interviewing.

• Post-Offer Physical Assessment (POPA).
• Journeyman Assessment for Lineworker Progression (JALP).
• Must produce a qualification certificate showing you are a qualified journeyman lineman.

Pay

The starting wage rate for this position is $47.48 per hour with a top rate of $52.00, specific to the locality of the job. This wage rate is based on skills, education, licenses, certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity.
