Lineman A

About the Role

This position is the highest level in a multi-step progression from Apprentice Lineman to Journeyman Lineman. The role involves installing, repairing, and maintaining overhead and underground electrical power lines and auxiliary equipment. Employees at lower steps in this classification are expected to progress into all aspects of these duties.

Responsibilities

• String, splice, transfer, and sag wire in energized or de-energized circuits; connect wires and transformers as specified or directed.
• Shorten or lengthen lines by adding or removing wire using various types of splices, connectors, sleeves, or clamps.
• Work above ground on poles or steel towers using climbers, safety belts, man lift equipment, boom trucks, or other specialized equipment.
• Use underground locating and fault-finding equipment.
• Route or re-route power lines over, under, or around existing lines and structures, often working near energized lines.
• Select and use "hot line" tools and protective devices such as rubber gloves, line hoses, mechanical jumpers, fiber guards, and blankets.
• Work on all voltage levels as required throughout the system.
• Install, remove, transfer, maintain, or repair cross arms, pins, insulators, guys, transformer and switch racks, and other overhead or Underground Residential Distribution (U.R.D.) equipment.
• Install and remove transformers, including primary and secondary current transformers, self-contained meters, cut-outs, disconnecting switches, circuit breakers, and other overhead or U.R.D. devices.
• Install street and area lights, working with primary and secondary voltages.
• Perform line switching or sectionalizing as directed; perform emergency repairs, phase and connect circuits under load, and perform load checks and balance feeders.
• Inspect lines, poles, and equipment for signs of damage or wear and report deficiencies.
• Assist in carrying poles, digging holes, piking and guying poles, and other operations involved in setting or replacing poles; may erect steel towers.
• Assist in on-the-job training of apprentices and other crew members in maintenance and construction of power lines.
• Troubleshoot electrical problems on Company and customer equipment.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Journeyman-level experience installing and maintaining overhead and underground power lines.
• Valid CDL A license.
• First Aid Certification.
• Competency in CPR and pole top rescue.
• Ability to pass drug, alcohol, and background checks.
• Ability to pass a physical examination.
• Able and willing to travel long distances on short notice and work extended periods in various locations.
• Able and willing to work in all types of weather environments, including inclement weather.
• Able and willing to work overtime when required.
