Line Troubleman

Ameren Missouri has been providing electric and gas service for more than 100 years, with electric rates among the lowest in the nation. Our mission is to power the quality of life for 1.2 million electric and 132,000 natural gas customers in central and eastern Missouri, covering 64 counties and over 500 communities, including the greater St. Louis area.

Responsibilities

• Patrol, repair, and restore service or report trouble on overhead and underground circuits, working mostly on a rotating shift but occasionally on a regular day shift.
• Drive a company automobile equipped with tools and materials to make residential, commercial, or industrial trouble calls and handle customer service repairs.
• Clear and install fallen wires, respond to “light out” and “power off” customer calls, and locate trouble to restore service or inform dispatchers.
• Test circuits and equipment for faults (open, ground, or short circuits) and clear issues if possible.
• Inspect, repair, reinstall, or string services; clear tree limbs; replace brackets; and replace blown fuses (line, transformer, or substation).
• Patrol and repair street lighting, alley circuits, or feeders, and inspect, report, and clear emergency substation trouble.
• Check substation operation, read meters, change ammeter or voltmeter charts, and check relay and breaker operations, resetting relays as needed.
• Perform routine or emergency switching on overhead or underground circuits of all voltages, as directed by dispatchers.
• Phase out and establish phase rotation on overhead and underground circuits, and respond to fire alarms by clearing company wires or customers’ circuits.
• Install and remove grounds and protective equipment on poles or in substations, and investigate and extinguish fires on poles or in manholes.
• Investigate and report company accidents involving personal injury or property damage, and investigate current thefts or respond to jury summonses.
• Change burned-out transformers in special cases with assistance, make load tests on transformers, and install or read watt-hour and maximum demand meters.
• Wind, set, or change time clocks, and read check meters on poles.
• Write requisitions and reports on all work performed.
• In some areas, perform blocking and releasing of regulators, switching operations in substations, and turn gas service on or off.
• Operate an inhalator in accident cases.

Special Responsibilities

• Respond quickly to customer calls, locate trouble, and restore service as fast as possible.
• Ensure careful use and custody of the trouble car, tools, and materials.
• Properly account for small amounts of money collected on non-pay orders.
• Observe safety rules and traffic laws to ensure public safety on streets, highways, and customer premises.
• Make prompt decisions on your own initiative and exercise care when clearing or guarding fallen high-voltage wires.
• Keep information confidential regarding accident investigations, current diversions, or non-pay orders.

Contacts

• Interact with customers while carrying out assignments.
• Coordinate with Overhead and Underground Foremen during switching operations to clear circuits.

Working Conditions

• Exposed to outside weather conditions; must dress appropriately for indoor and outdoor work.
• Regularly scheduled or frequently called to work at night under inadequate artificial light, and sometimes in rain, sleet, or snow.
• Subject to emergency work at any time during a 24-hour cycle.
• May work in cramped or crowded positions, on slippery or uneven footing, and often alone.

Hazards

• Risk of falls, shocks, flashes, or burns while working alone on poles.
• Exposure to hazards from street and highway traffic, dog bites, and falls on customers’ premises.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• One year of experience as a Lineman or successful completion of the Apprentice Line Troubleman Training program.
• Thorough knowledge of overhead line construction and standard practices.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
• Proficiency in artificial respiration techniques.
• Must be alert, neat in appearance, resourceful, agile, quick-acting, and physically able-bodied.

Pay

Hourly pay: $57.11 USD (Grade Step IA 229, Step 1 of 1 – Top Step). Position is eligible for annual incentive payments based on company performance, subject to management discretion.
