Line Manager (Rolling Mill)

SA Metal Group is South Africa’s oldest and largest metal recycling company. For more than 107 years, the Group has purchased, collected and processed all forms of scrap metal sourced throughout Southern Africa. The Group has developed and expanded its recycling and manufacturing operations by melting, refining, casting and rolling scrap metal into higher value products for the domestic and export markets. Facilities are located in and around Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria.

About the role

The SA Steelworks Division has a position for a qualified, committed, hardworking and motivated Line Manager at the SA Steelworks plant in Cape Town. This is a shift position.

Responsibilities

• Manage Rolling Mill team to achieve set production targets within stipulated standards
• Minimise non-productive time
• Analyse reasons for periods of non-production against metrics and confirm findings with team members
• Communicate operating plan to meet production goals and company/departmental policies
• Provide frequent feedback to Senior management on shift and plant performance
• Attend daily morning production meeting, evaluate and liaise with Engineering on priority requirements, and take decisive action
• Follow up on unfinished tasks (housekeeping and safety) with responsible sections, demand quality workmanship, and communicate with relevant supervisors
• Evaluate PTOs, initiate corrective action where required, record and file with Production Manager
• Support teams through empowerment and accomplishment
• Manage teams with respect to safety, including issuing PPE and executing monthly safety element inspections
• Promote sound safe working procedures and labour relation practices
• Provide guidance to team Supervisors through empowerment
• Interface with service department teams where production or safety may be at risk
• Manage performance management scheduling
• Compile shift report including general incidents (delays, breakouts, etc.)
• Interpret, plan and implement cleaning and maintenance schedules (Housekeeping)
• Ensure thorough shift handover and clear reporting of all issues
• Work overtime as determined by plant operational status
• Abide by regulations set out in O.H.S.A. and company policies

Requirements

• Matric (Maths compulsory)
• Tertiary education in metallurgical or chemical industry will be an advantage
• Strong aptitude for science and mathematics
• Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical engineering principles and practice
• Computer literate (Microsoft Office)
• Excellent communication skills (verbal, written and presentation)
• Minimum 8 years’ experience in a production or mechanical environment
• A motivated, self-driven individual able to perform well with minimum supervision
• Ability to work under challenging conditions
• Basic knowledge of Health & Safety Rules
• Good health and physically fit

Schedule

• Standard hours: 07:00 – 19:00 (Dayshift) or 19:00 – 07:00 (Nightshift)
• Rotating shifts; exact work hours will be supplied in a roster
• Overtime may be required as per operational needs
