Line & Grade Instrument Man II

About the role

The Line & Grade Instrument Man II provides expertise and coordination in using surveying equipment to ensure work is laid out accurately and effectively. This role involves collaborating with the Party Chief, Superintendent, and Foremen to install layout on projects, contributing to safety and project management through daily observations and communication, and resolving field constructability issues.

Responsibilities

• Accurately maintain all physical site dimensions and controls.
• Perform accurate layout of building locations, structures, and dimensions throughout the project.
• Assist in establishing procedures and coordinating with the client to define primary survey points and transfer building control on the site.
• Establish secondary control and communicate procedures to individual work crews.
• Implement procedures to provide layout methods and check/re-check accuracy.
• Provide required data to the Party Chief to establish defining points needed in a data collector.
• Calculate and monitor concrete hold quantities on a daily basis.
• Maintain communication with Party Chief, Superintendent, Foremen, and other trades to coordinate project layout.
• Serve as the Party Chief on smaller projects when needed.
• Set up and verify the accuracy of surveying equipment through pegging, double centering, or other methods.
• Validate calculations and other information provided by the Party Chief/Superintendent.
• Review construction documents for accuracy, deviations, and conflicts; write clarification requests accordingly.
• Collaborate with Party Chief, Superintendent, Foremen, and other trades to resolve constructability conflicts.
• Interface with the Formwork Engineering department to provide layout for formwork shop drawings.
• Maintain field notes and documentation generated by layout.
• Review and understand construction drawings and identify discrepancies.
• Communicate changes and maintain technical drawings, as-builts, clarification logs, etc.
• Apply general construction tolerances in the application of work, including determining the most stringent tolerance.
• Set an example by following safety guidelines, including wearing PPE and staying aware of surroundings.
• Attend and participate in Tool Box Talks and provide input for Safety Task Analysis.
• Comply with proper safety procedures.

Requirements

• High School Diploma and 4 years of construction experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 2 years of experience as a Line & Grade Instrument Man I.
• Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers and regulatory agencies.
• Good listening skills and ability to work within a team environment.
• Ability to calculate figures such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume; understanding of geometry and trigonometry.
• Knowledge of industry tolerances and working knowledge of the coordinate system.
• Ability to work harmoniously, respectfully, and effectively with subordinates, peers, supervisors, and clients.
• Team player who provides information to the workforce, resolves conflict, and offers feedback.
• Ability to direct work.

Pay

Compensation for this position is expected to range from $65,600 to $82,000 annually. Actual compensation offered may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, education, training, skills, certifications, geographic location, market conditions, and business needs.
