Line C&M - IP-3204 - PA Operations - Indiana

This posting is for several open positions with FirstEnergy Pennsylvania Electric Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., reporting to the Indiana, PA service center. All Journey Line Worker classifications and the associated line of progression are represented by IBEW 459. This position is a DOT (Department of Transportation) covered classification and is subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening.

About the role

We are hiring qualified Journey Line Workers to work throughout our PA service territory in Distribution. Journey Line Workers are responsible for building and maintaining electric power systems and for restoring electric service to commercial, industrial, agricultural and residential customers. Work is predominantly outdoors and in all weather conditions.

Line workers must be able to drive safely, work extended hours, travel/transfer to new headquarters upon request at any time (General Construction Positions), and wear company-provided Personal Protective Equipment.

Responsibilities

• Travel to various job locations within the geographically assigned region (for General Construction).
• Review job work requirements and provide input regarding work for the day.
• Load and unload tools, materials, and supplies into and out of vehicles at crew headquarters and job sites.
• Lift, pull, and carry insulators, cross-arms, equipment, tools, grounds, dampers, and other materials to and from job sites.
• Load and unload tools, materials, and equipment off of hand lines while standing on elevated structures, including wood poles and insulated work platforms.
• Climb poles using boot hooks or aerial lift.
• Test, frame, set, and/or anchor poles; string electric power lines and install cross-arms.
• Perform substation switching; install and replace switches, circuit protection equipment, insulators, meters, and streetlights.
• Hang and energize transformers; take voltage readings.
• Troubleshoot problems and determine the extent of repairs on primary and secondary overhead or underground dead legs.
• Use hand and power tools; dig holes by hand for pole installation; climb ladders, poles, embankments, and towers; work at heights above 35’ on poles and in aerial lifts; set grounds; work with live circuits; and work in trenches, manholes, and confined spaces.
• Set and install underground structures; locate, pull, remove, splice, or terminate cables.
• Install and replace equipment, meters, and streetlights.
• Operate hydraulic equipment including drills, boom truck, digger, pole tamper, hydraulic jack, and bucket truck once certified.
• Operate lift equipment such as aerial lifts and line truck booms.
• Operate forklift to load and unload work materials and supplies.
• Travel by vehicle, motor boat, or off-road utility vehicle (OUV) to access job sites.
• Drive a Class A vehicle (e.g., bucket truck and line truck) to and from job sites.
• Drive a company pickup truck or passenger vehicle to job sites, work locations, meetings, and training; may use vehicle to pick up or deliver supplies and materials.
• Conduct daily vehicle inspections.
• Provide back-up relief in the temporary absence of a foreman; direct work to other crew members and act as a leader.
• Attend all mandated OSHA and company training.
• Provide on-the-job training, orientation, demonstration, and assistance to apprentice linemen.

Requirements

• Completion of a federal or state-sanctioned line worker apprenticeship with approved supporting documentation (e.g., IBEW Journeyman Lineman A Ticket) and/or union or union-affiliated sponsored line worker apprenticeship.
• At least 2 years of hands-on experience with electric utility or a utility lines construction contractor.
• Must possess a valid Class A driving permit by the first day of employment.
• Must have passed a DMV medical exam by the first day of employment.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• High School diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience.
• Ability to wear company-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
• Ability to work and drive in all types of weather and road conditions.
• Capable of working extended hours, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• If hired as Provisional, must complete the provisional training plan within one year from the hire date.
• Successful candidates must pass the following pre-employment requirements prior to beginning employment: drug screen, background check, Post Offer Physical (POPA).
• Experienced in rubber gloving and hot stick procedures.
• Experience in transmission and distribution work, underground, and numerous voltages.
• Effective team player with strong communication skills.

Pre-employment testing: FirstEnergy Employees must have qualified on all prerequisite tests prior to submitting an application and all secondary tests prior to interviewing. Post-Offer Physical Assessment (POPA) and Journeyman Assessment for Lineworker Progression (JALP) are required. You must produce a qualification certificate showing you are a qualified journey line worker.

Pay

The starting wage rate for this position is $50.11 per hour with a top rate of $55.61. This wage rate is specific to the locality of the job and is based on multiple factors, including skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity.
