Responsibilities

  • Plans and implements curriculum to meet the criteria of NAEYC.
  • Evaluate the individual abilities and developmental needs of children; communicate effectively with children and parents and address ways to support transitions between home and center.
  • Conduct daily observations to ensure that each child is observed weekly as demonstrated by documentation and use of anecdotal and developmental checklists for planning, portfolios and assessment for each child in the fall, winter and spring.
  • Communication notes are completed daily for each child and presented to parents.
  • Classroom journal is used to document relevant information to classroom staff.
  • Conferences are held with parents in the fall, winter and spring and goals are mutually defined.
  • Parents are consulted about their child's needs and careful follow through will occur through written and verbal communication in a timely manner.
  • Information relevant to the classroom such as teacher absences and contagious diseases are posted as needed.
  • Written, age-appropriate, and culturally sensitive activity plans are completed and submitted to the coordinator and are posted within specified time frames as evidenced by observation and audit.
  • Plans will include field trips, intergenerational experiences, any approved videotapes and playground activities as demonstrated by audit.
  • Listens attentively to children, clearly responds to their questions and requests.
  • Encourages children of all ages to use language by clearly repeating their sounds, asking open ended questions, and providing opportunities for positive interaction and dialogue throughout their day.
  • Covers inside and out, cleaning and sanitizing chairs and tables, children's bathrooms, carpet upkeep, sanitation of equipment and materials as demonstrated by observation and audit.
  • Playground and Classroom environment including the teacher supply closet, shed, cabinets, counter tops, and equipment and materials are organized and clutter free.
  • Playground safety checklists are completed and submitted daily.
  • Verbally notifies the coordinator, manager, and director immediately of any safety concerns.
  • Help orient, guide and evaluate the Assistant, Teachers, Interns, or volunteers and act as a role model especially in the areas of health, safety and child guidance.
  • Coordinates with all coordinators to complete assigned projects or tasks.
  • Ensures that all staff practice appropriate guidance for age group assigned and that respect and caring is demonstrated for each child at all times.
  • Aids in purchasing supplies, inputting data into the computer, van upkeep, census reports and other assigned projects with accuracy and in a timely manner.
  • Ensures that attendance rosters, flash counts are maintained as required from the beginning to the end of the day and submitted to the coordinator.
  • Ensures that all staff follows the CACFP guidelines regarding time of meal service, appropriate portion size and recording of all meals at the time of service.
  • Ensures that all staff is made aware of the needs of children who require special care including those with Individual Educational Plans (IEP) and medical needs.
  • An effective framework is implemented for classroom guidance and discipline consisting of standards of behavior and courtesy, stemming from a foundation of respect and caring for each child, using guidance and discipline techniques plus health and safety guidelines from both ADHS and NAEYC.
  • Children will be kept clean within reason of activity; health habits and rules will be stringently followed.
  • Effectively supervises children by sight and sound both inside and outside the classroom at all times.
  • Performance evaluation of the Assistant, Interns, Volunteers, and Teachers will be provided to the manager or director as required.
  • May act as daily coordinator for the center on a rotating basis as assigned.
  • Coordinates staffing by ensuring that teacher/child ratios are in compliance at all times.
  • Plans for staffing for the following day.
  • Covers breaks as necessary and responds to time-off requests in a timely manner.
  • Maintain sick/absence communications to teachers and manages ill/injured children in compliance with established guidelines.
  • Maintain compliance with governing regulations as indicated by documentation.
  • Collects data reports and ensures classroom paperwork is completed in accordance with guidelines.
  • Communicates with coordinator, manager, director and parents to resolve issues.
  • Answers telephones in reception area as needed.
  • Coordinates field trips in compliance with established guidelines.
  • Provides written documentation of significant events e.g. illness, parent complaints, safety concerns, injuries, etc. and follows appropriate procedures.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field such as Human Development, or Family Studies or Child Care Administration - Preferred
  • High School Diploma or GED and - Required
  • One of the following: (a) Current Child Development Associate (CDA) from the Council for Professional Recognition, or (b) Early Childhood Certificate from an accredited college with 1-2 years teaching experience, or (c) Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field such as Human Development, or Family Studies or Child Care Administration, or (d) Successful completion of related Associates Degree qualifying coursework as evidenced by a written qualifying statement from the accredited college that coursework is completed - Required
  • Experience: 1 to 2 years' as teacher or equivalent - Required
  • Experience: 2 years as lead teacher or equivalent - Preferred
