Light Vehicle Mechanic

About the Role

The Light Vehicle Mechanic performs routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on light vehicles. The role involves identifying mechanical and electrical faults, replacing defective parts, and ensuring vehicles meet safety and performance standards.

Responsibilities

• Inspect vehicles to identify mechanical, electrical, and electronic issues.
• Diagnose faults using diagnostic equipment and testing tools.
• Perform routine maintenance such as oil changes, filter replacements, tire rotations, and brake servicing.
• Repair or replace defective components including engines, transmissions, suspension systems, steering systems, and electrical parts.
• Conduct vehicle safety inspections and road tests.
• Maintain accurate service and repair records.
• Follow manufacturer specifications and workplace safety procedures.
• Advise customers or service advisors on required repairs and maintenance.
• Keep tools, equipment, and work areas clean and organized.

Requirements

• Knowledge of automotive systems, engines, transmissions, brakes, and electrical systems.
• Ability to use diagnostic scanners and repair tools.
• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
• Good attention to detail and commitment to safety.
• Physical ability to lift parts and work in various positions.
• Relevant vocational training, apprenticeship, or certification in automotive technology.
• Valid driver’s license (often required).

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience servicing and repairing light vehicles.
• Familiarity with computerized diagnostic systems.
• Experience with both gasoline and diesel engines (depending on employer requirements).

Working Conditions

• Work is typically performed in automotive workshops, dealerships, or fleet maintenance facilities.
• May require standing for long periods, lifting heavy components, and working with tools and machinery.
• Occasional overtime may be required to meet service demands.
