About the role
Monitor, control and prevent situations hazardous to the health and safety of beach patrons through alert, responsive observations of the beach and the ocean. Execute rescue procedures promptly and efficiently when necessary. Provide resuscitative care when needed. Work is performed under general supervision.
Essential functions
- Observe and monitor beach patrons
- Enforce City Ordinances
- Initiate water rescues in various situations and conditions
- Provide emergency first aid care for injuries and life-threatening condition until EMS personnel arrive
- Regulate activities that may threaten beach patrons or property
- Sets up and breaks down lifeguard tower; evaluate and informs public of ocean conditions
- Swims in rough water and strong surf to assist swimmers and make rescues as needed
- Assists in locating missing persons
- Provides information, answers patrons' questions
- Maintains high physical fitness level through mandatory workouts
- Maintains training in medical rescues
- Prepares incident reports

Knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics
- Knowledge of Basic Life Support procedures; lifesaving, resuscitative techniques and actions, along with beach operations
- Ability to care for patients with traumatic injuries in highly stressful situations
- Ability to run and swim with strength and endurance
- Ability to perform emergency medical procedures
- Ability to direct recreational activities in the ocean environment
- Ability to perform job functions in stressful situations
- Skill in using Semi-Automatic Defibrillators in cardiac emergencies
- Proficiency in performing CPR Professional Rescuer
Minimum qualifications
- High school graduate or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma
- Must be 18 years of age
- Previous ocean lifeguarding experience preferred
- Must complete the beach performance test in under 30 minutes (¼ mile run, 600yd swim, 600yd paddle)
- Able to successfully enter water from a height over 25ft (pier jump)
- Requires weekends and holidays
Required licenses, certifications or registrations
- American Red Cross Lifeguarding or equivalent
- American Heart Association and/or American Red Cross Professional Rescuer CPR Certificate
- Valid State of Florida Driver's License

Pay
Hourly pay of $18.41. Full-Time Non-Exempt position based on a 40-hour work week. This is part of the Public Employees Union (PEU).
Schedule
Based at Leisure Services Beach Complex located at 10 South Ocean Blvd, Lake Worth, FL 33460. Requires weekends and holidays.
