Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintains safety in swimming areas by enforcing rules and responding to emergencies.
- Performs rescues, initiates emergency procedures, and administers first aid.
- Maintains pool water chemistry, adjusts chemical levels, and ensures safety standards are met.
- Supports aquatics programming, assists with water quality maintenance, and promotes cleanliness.
- Inspects and cleans pool facilities; assists with routine pool maintenance tasks.
- Officiates or assists with swim meets and aquatic events.
- Develops and delivers aquatic programs such as swim lessons and water safety instruction; maintains accurate records.
- Handles sensitive or confidential information according to County policies.
Requirements
- Current enrollment in High School, High School Diploma, or GED.
- Must be 15 years or older.
- CPR certified.
- Successfully completed New Mexico lifeguard and safety training.
Qualifications
Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Supplemental Information
- Screening and Compliance: Post-offer employment medical examination and background investigation required.
- Safety Guidelines: Adherence to all County safety guidelines.
- FEMA Training: Completion of assigned training.
- Driver's License: Valid New Mexico driver’s license by date of hire and maintained during employment.
- Supervisor Training: Completion of required supervisor training, if applicable.
- Certifications: Required certifications must remain current during employment.
Working Conditions
- Outdoor work 75% of time when assigned to outdoor pools; 25% of time when assigned to indoor pools.
- Indoor work performed in a temperature-controlled environment; exposure to wet cement, mat surfaces, concrete, asphalt, ramps, stairs, wood decks, and ladder chairs.
- Work hazards include exposure to dangerous emergency situations, hazardous chemicals, and possible exposure to bodily fluids from persons with life-threatening diseases.
Equipment, Tools, and Materials
- Writing utensils, various paperwork, files and reports, statistical reports, daily pool chemistry logs, daily bank deposits, and ordinary office record keeping.
- Hazardous materials: chlorine gas, chlorine bleach, hydrochloric acid, sodium bisulfate, sodium thiosulfate, carbon dioxide gas, sodium bicarbonate, calcium chloride, muriatic acid, calcium hypochlorite, and other pool chemicals.
- Filter mask for handling some hazardous chemicals.
