Job Description

The primary responsibility of a Life Skills Special Education Teacher at East Central Kansas Special Education Cooperative is to provide specialized instruction in life skills to students with special needs. This includes teaching daily living skills, vocational training, and socialization skills.

About the Role

This position offers a supportive environment where teachers can collaborate with other professionals to develop individualized education plans (IEPs) that meet the unique needs of each student. The teacher will work closely with families to ensure that educational goals are met and supported outside of school hours.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement lesson plans tailored to individual student needs
  • Provide direct instruction in life skills, vocational training, and socialization
  • Collaborate with other educators, therapists, and support staff to create and modify IEPs
  • Assess student progress and adjust teaching strategies accordingly
  • Participate in team meetings and professional development opportunities
  • Work with families to support student learning both inside and outside of the classroom

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field
  • A valid teaching license in Special Education
  • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse and inclusive setting

Qualifications

To be considered for this position, candidates must have a strong commitment to supporting students with special needs and a passion for making a positive impact on their lives. Previous experience in a special education setting is preferred but not required.

Skills

Effective communication, patience, adaptability, and the ability to work collaboratively are essential skills for this role. Proficiency in using assistive technology and familiarity with current best practices in special education are also beneficial.
