Lieutenant (#013628) Broad River Correctional Institution, Columbia (RICHLAND) Level 3

Responsibilities

• Plans, coordinates, and directs the actions of the security staff.
• Oversees security, custody, and control of inmates in assigned unit(s) of a medium/maximum security facility.
• Assumes primary responsibility for security of all buildings and public property.
• Conducts routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff perform their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with all inmate counts for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.
• Successfully completes eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements

• High school diploma.
• Three (3) years’ experience in correctional, security, military, or police work, including one (1) year of supervisory experience.
• A degree in Criminal Justice or a related field may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
