About the role
The Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED) is a dynamic and innovative regulatory agency licensing and regulating Colorado’s commercial Medical and Retail Marijuana industries. The Division implements legislation, develops regulations, conducts regulatory and criminal investigations, issues business licenses, engages in outreach and education, and enforces compliance mandates. The MED promotes transparency and innovation through a collaborative approach in a fast-paced professional environment.
The position provides support services for the licensing processing section, performing initial application reviews, managing workload, answering stakeholder questions, and processing payments.
Responsibilities
- Conduct background checks on applicants/licensees, interview and consult with applicants on suitability requirements, and provide final recommendations for occupational license applicants.
- Follow up on occupational application deficiencies via written requests and refer applicants for additional investigation if necessary.
- Train and guide new Division license staff in processing applications to comply with statute and accepted procedures.
- Process requests to withdraw applications.
- Disseminate information and respond to licensing inquiries from the public, licensees, applicants, and Division staff through interpersonal contact, telephone, written correspondence, and email.
- Manage incoming mail, perform front counter functions (e.g., checking in applicants, receipting funds, answering phones, tracking correspondence), and refer inquiries to appropriate sections.
- Review fingerprint results for owner licensure and coordinate with the Analysis and Resolution Team on licensing matters.
- Assist with final licensing steps for approval of a Responsible Vendor.
- Receive and reconcile payments (checks, credit cards, money orders) from applicants, prepare daily deposits, and ensure compliance with accounting policies.
Requirements
- Five (5) years of relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position.
- A combination of related education and/or relevant experience equal to five (5) years may substitute for the experience requirement.
- Residency in the State of Colorado at the time of application submission.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience interpreting and applying statutes, rules, and regulations.
- Experience in a highly regulated industry prioritizing public health and safety.
- Experience in the public sector or interacting with government agencies.
- Proficiency in Google Suite, Microsoft Word, and Excel.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Experience managing a high-volume workload and physical/digital records.
- Strong attention to detail, time management, and ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
- Critical thinking, integrity, and strong people skills.
- Previous experience in a licensing or regulatory environment.
