Licensed Vocational Nurse PRN Nights

About the Role

The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) provides nursing care for patients experiencing common, well-defined health problems. The LVN functions as a member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, utilizing the nursing process in the implementation of patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse. This role involves making safe, appropriate, and independent decisions within the scope of LVN nursing practice while adhering to Joint Commission, Federal, and State regulations, as well as Oceans' mission and policies.

Responsibilities

• Deliver quality nursing care to assigned patients by collecting data, identifying deviations from normal, and assisting with reassessments under the direction of a registered nurse.
• Accurately document findings in patient records, identify expected outcomes, and communicate assessment results with the healthcare team.
• Implement nursing care interventions from individualized multidisciplinary treatment plans, collaborating with other providers and performing procedures/treatments as prescribed.
• Conduct bedside laboratory tests, wound care, and assist with activities of daily living (ADLs) while promoting patient coping and adaptation to illness or stressors.
• Provide supportive, age-appropriate, and culturally acceptable communication and interventions, documenting special needs.
• Administer medications safely, following facility policies and physician orders, and ensure patient assessments before and after administration.
• Communicate and document medication doses accurately, provide patient education, and follow up on care responsibilities to ensure continuity.
• Transcribe orders accurately, perform chart audits, and utilize nursing knowledge to meet facility, patient, and staff needs.
• Enhance evidence-based practice through nursing resources and serve as a preceptor to new staff.
• Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements

• Current, valid, and active license to practice as a Licensed Vocational/Practical Nurse in the state of employment or a valid Compact license.
• High School Diploma or GED required.
• One year of inpatient hospital experience strongly preferred.
• Ability to work in high-stress environments and assess potential for patient escalation.
• Strong oral and written communication skills to achieve positive results with internal and external customers.
• Highly organized with an understanding of and sensitivity to culturally diverse and special needs populations (e.g., Chronically Mentally Ill, Geriatric, Chemical Dependency).
• Basic knowledge of normal physical and emotional development.
• Critical thinking abilities for continuous improvement of patient care.
• Self-confidence and conceptual thinking to lead and direct others.
• Must complete CPR certification and an Oceans-approved behavioral health de-escalation program.

Work Environment

• Subject to frequent interruptions and occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.
• High-paced and potentially stressful environment; must cope mentally and physically with the atmosphere.
• May encounter disagreeable odors, sights, or unpredictable patient behavior.
• Approximately 90% or more of time spent indoors, with protection from weather but not necessarily temperature changes.
