About the role

Harris County Public Health (HCPH) is a network of over 1,100 public health professionals serving approximately 2.3 million residents in unincorporated Harris County. HCPH offers a range of services including medical and dental services, community programming, and health education.

Responsibilities

  • Gives age-appropriate immunizations, staying updated with CDC vaccine schedules.
  • Serves as a vaccination coordinator for the Vaccine for Children's (VFC) Program with the Texas Department of Health Services (DSHS).
  • Aids in patient screening, including drawing blood, testing urine, and recording vital signs.
  • Records and documents medical/psychosocial information in electronic medical records.
  • Provides sex-related disease (STD) treatments and testing.
  • Assists providers in tracking and monitoring abnormal lab results and notifies patients of these results.
  • Executes orders written by providers, such as family planning methods, and dispenses prescribed medications according to pharmacy regulations and HCPH procedures.
  • Maintains knowledge of CDC recommended vaccines and administers age-appropriate immunizations as needed.
  • Acts as an alternate immunization coordinator for the Department of State Health Services Texas Vaccine for Children Program.
  • Supports referrals and coordination of care for patients with the Primary Care Provider on site.

Requirements

  • Active license as a License Vocational Nurse in the State of Texas by the Texas Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certified.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License.

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal & written).
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and foster teamwork in a diverse environment.
  • Knowledge of current CDC recommendations for immunizations.
  • Ability to organize material, prioritize job tasks, make reliable judgments, and draw conclusions from verbal discussions and written data.
  • Ability to draw conclusions from data, such as lab tests, to record this information accurately in patient’s record, and to notify the Clinical Manager or medical providers when deviations occur.

General Information

  • Position Type and Typical Hours of Work: Full-time, funded through special revenue, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
  • Physical Demands: Requires the ability to lift, carry, push, pull up to 50 pounds and bend and stand for periods at a time.
