About the Role

As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Oceans Behavioral Hospital Longview, you will provide nursing care for patients managing anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. You will function as a key member of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, utilizing the nursing process to implement patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse while making safe, appropriate, and independent decisions within the scope of LPN practice.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver quality nursing care by collecting data, identifying deviations from normal, and assisting with patient reassessments under the direction of a registered nurse.
  • Document all findings thoroughly in patient records, identify expected outcomes, and communicate assessment findings with the healthcare team.
  • Implement nursing care interventions from individualized multidisciplinary treatment plans, collaborating with other providers and performing procedures/treatments as prescribed.
  • Conduct bedside laboratory tests, wound care, and assist with activities of daily living (ADLs); support patients in coping, adapting, and managing illness-related stressors.
  • Provide culturally appropriate, age-appropriate communication and interventions, documenting special needs as required.
  • Administer medications safely in accordance with facility policies and physician orders, ensuring proper patient assessment before and after administration.
  • Communicate and document medication doses accurately, including patient education on administered medications.
  • Follow up on patient care responsibilities, communicate incomplete assignments, and ensure continuity of care across disciplines.
  • Transcribe orders accurately, perform chart audits, and utilize nursing knowledge to meet facility, patient, and staff needs.
  • Enhance evidence-based practice through nursing resources and serve as a preceptor to new staff, providing guidance and leadership.
  • Perform additional duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Current, valid, and active license to practice as a Licensed Vocational/Practical Nurse (LVN/LPN) in the state of employment (valid Compact licenses accepted).
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • One year of inpatient hospital experience strongly preferred.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Ability to work in high-stress environments and assess potential for patient escalation.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to achieve positive results with internal and external customers.
  • Highly organized with sensitivity to culturally diverse and special needs populations (e.g., chronically mentally ill, geriatric, chemically dependent).
  • Understanding of normal physical and emotional development.
  • Critical thinking abilities for continuous improvement of patient care.
  • Self-confidence and conceptual thinking to lead and direct others.
  • Must complete CPR certification and an Oceans-approved behavioral health de-escalation program.

Work Environment

  • Subject to frequent interruptions and occasional pressure from multiple calls and inquiries.
  • High-paced, potentially stressful atmosphere requiring strong coping skills.
  • May encounter disagreeable odors, sights, or unpredictable patient behavior.
  • Approximately 90% or more of time spent indoors with protection from weather but not necessarily temperature changes.
