Licensed Vocational Nurse III

About the role

The Licensed Vocational Nurse III position at the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) serves individuals with complex medical, mental health, and behavioral health issues at State Supported Living Centers (SSLCs). This role involves performing advanced nursing tasks, administering medications, and providing on-the-job training to new LVNs.

Responsibilities

• Attends work on a regular basis and may work shifts as required.
• Administers medications and treatments orally, rectally, internally, or by injection.
• Makes rounds and/or home visits as needed and works in other locations at the SSLC.
• Demonstrates competency in performing complex technical nursing tasks and procedures in accordance with HHSC, SSLC, and state regulations.
• Collects specimens for laboratory examination and conducts appropriate screening tests.
• Maintains accurate documentation and reports pertinent treatments and observations in the individual’s medical record.
• Trains and instructs new LVN staff to perform nursing functions at the SSLC.
• Assists RNs with implementation of protocols, procedures, and programs to improve overall health and safety of staff and individuals.
• Responds to emergency situations to ensure safety of individuals.

Requirements

• Graduation from a LVN program.
• 6 months prior employment experience as an LVN.
• At least 12 months of prior employment as an LVN is preferred.
• Experience working or volunteering directly with persons with intellectual disabilities or other developmental disabilities is preferred.
• Experience training/teaching or leading others is preferred.
• Experience using an electronic health record system is preferred.

Qualifications

• Licensed to practice as a licensed vocational nurse in the state of Texas, or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.
• Must maintain current CPR certification.
• Must have strength and flexibility to safely perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Skills

• Knowledge of nursing care standards, nursing procedures and techniques.
• Knowledge of emergency procedures and emergency equipment.
• Knowledge of state and federal laws and ICF-IID rules, regulations, policy and procedures related to State Supported Living Center.
• Skills in using reasoning to identify problems and in considering appropriate resolution of situations.
• Skill in the operation of computers and applicable computer software.
• Ability to organize, coordinate, and evaluate nursing activities and delivery of health services.
• Ability to interpret policies and procedures; to interpret health care regulations; to recognize patterns of medical necessity treatment; and to plan, assign, and/or oversee the work of others.
• Ability to interpret regulations and communicate them effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to provide patient care to a wide variety of individuals with complex medical, mental health and/or behavioral health issues.
• Ability to prepare and maintain records and to use an electronic health record system.
• Ability to communicate effectively and to instruct others.

$4,866.58 - $6,335.66 per month
