Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Administers prescribed medications according to physician's and parent's instructions; dispenses medications based on established District procedures and/or as directed; maintains related records and documents.
  • Administers minor first aid to ill and injured children; distributes adhesive bandages, ice and compresses as necessary; performs routine first aid and CPR/AED as needed.
  • Establishes and maintains cumulative health and immunization record files for each student; reconciles student health records with student enrollment records; reviews immunization records and maintains related data.
  • Maintains inventory and orders first aid supplies; distributes first aid kits to appropriate site or office location; requisitions health office supplies as necessary.
  • Aids in maintaining immunization records; prepares list of students with health problems and students exempt for physical education participation.
  • Aids in the preparation, arrangements and implementation of health testing programs and immunizations; maintains related records.
  • Responds to emergency medical situations and administers First Aid and CPR as appropriate.
  • Aids in the care of students with special needs as directed, which may include direct medical intervention for specific students.
  • Attends meetings and conferences related to assigned activities.
  • May ride a school bus to accompany and care for a student with specific healthcare or medical needs.
  • May provide coverage in a school site health office, performing varying technical duties to ensure health and safety of students.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Modern nursing principles, techniques, methods and procedures, and standard nursing practices.
  • Principles and practices of medical diagnosis of common illnesses, the disease process, treatments, and medication side effects.
  • Skill in providing effective nursing services, administering injections, medications, catheterization, gastrointestinal tube feeding, etc. with supervision and monitoring a credentialed school nurse.
  • Universal health precautions, proper techniques for handling and disposing of hazardous materials.
  • Patient care skills, procedures and proficiencies.
  • Principles and practices of medical file and records management, and patient file documentation procedures.
  • Medical terminology and the use of nursing equipment and supplies.
  • Communication skills to greet and deal cooperatively with students, parents, and school site staff, and to exercise patience with stressful situations.
  • Languages skills to document work activity and use basic medical terminology.

  • Exercise judgment in dealing with emergencies and special health needs.
  • Use discretion in handling confidential records and information.
  • Document appropriate measures taken in emergency situations.
  • Properly use medical equipment and devices such as blood pressure cuff, thermometer, and defibrillator.
  • Remain calm and effective during emergency situations.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Operate standard office equipment.
  • Protect the privacy of student information.

Physical Abilities

  • Function effectively indoors and outdoors in an office exam room environment engaged in work of a moderately active nature.
  • Ambulatory ability to move to various class and meeting room settings, to stoop, bend and kneel, and to reach.
  • Sufficient arm, hand and finger dexterity, coordination and strength to assist ill or injured students, use of medical equipment, operate keyboard, typewriter and other office equipment.
  • Speaking and auditory ability to project voice and carry out conversations with individuals and small groups in person and over the phone.
  • Routine travel to school sites.
