About the Role
Substitutes serve as temporary employees and assume responsibility for all aspects of the learning environment, including supervising students, managing student behavior, and ensuring continuity of learning in the absence of the employee. The substitute communicates effectively with students, staff, and the public.
Responsibilities
- Adheres to and administers curriculum provided by Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) or provided lesson plans created by the absent employee.
- Observes, follows, and understands LCPS policies, procedures, and expectations.
- Provides direction and supervision to students at all times, ensuring their safety and educational goals are a priority during the assignment.
- Is flexible to teach various subjects at different grade levels and remains confident, comfortable, and professional while providing appropriate classroom management.
- Works and builds positive relationships with students, staff, administrators, and the community to create a positive student environment.
- Provides feedback to the absent employee at the conclusion of each assignment with a summary that includes lessons covered, incidents, and student questions.
- Site-based substitutes are assigned to a single location and report daily to fill open short-term assignments, implementing employee-created lessons across content areas.
- Long-term substitute teachers (assignments exceeding 10 consecutive days) may include lesson planning, developing and grading assessments, delivering instruction, and communicating with parents, staff, and administrators.
Requirements
- Holds a current or expired Virginia teaching license, another U.S. state-issued teaching license, or is eligible for a teaching license via an accredited university or college.
- Experience as a lead teacher/instructor/professor of adults or children preferred.
- Experience teaching or training in a non-classroom public school environment (e.g., classroom/school/community volunteer, preschool instructor, coach, or child care provider) is preferred.
- Knowledge of effective classroom management strategies is preferred.
- Ability to follow oral and written directives and communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents in English.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly talking, expressing, or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, including conveying detailed or important instructions accurately, loudly, or quickly.
- Possesses normal cognitive abilities, including the ability to learn, recall, and apply practices and policies.
- Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods.
- Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.
Terms of Employment
Substitutes are employed on an at-will basis and are not considered contractual employees.
Pay
- Daily Substitute Rate: $19.29/hour or $135.03/day for a 7-hour day.
- Daily Loyalty Substitute Rate (25+ assignments): $21.43/hour or $150.01/day for a 7-hour day.
- Site-Based Substitute Rate: $22.00/hour or $154.00/day for a 7-hour day.
- Long-Term Substitute Rate: $28.57/hour or $200.00/day for a 7-hour day.
- Long-Term Substitute Counselor: $26.67/hour or $200.00/day for a 7.5-hour day.
