Compensation range: $25.00 - $33.75/hour. Individual salaries will be set within this range based on factors including market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise, and internal equity.

Responsibilities

  • Assists pharmacists by compounding, preparing, labelling, and dispensing medications under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
  • Maintains all requirements for licensure as a registered pharmacy technician in accordance with New York State Education Law and performs duties consistent with medication compounding.
  • Identifies problems and provides basic troubleshooting skills to maintain operation of technology to ensure the highest level of safety.
  • Participates in and reinforces environmental monitoring and compliance required by USP standards.
  • Uses and maintains technology and equipment utilized in compounding processes, including workflow devices, robotics, and computer software.
  • Demonstrates competency selecting appropriate products or devices for compounding processes.
  • Follows all departmental policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to compounding processes, including USP chapters 795, 797, and 800 (e.g., assigning Beyond Use Dates, proper garbing, aseptic technique, cleaning, hazardous medication handling).
  • Utilizes specialized compounding techniques for specific medication preparation requirements.
  • Anticipates patient compounding needs based on orders or information provided to the compounding area.
  • Follows required procedures for storage and disposal of controlled substances, pharmaceutical waste, blood/plasma-containing products, and hazardous materials.
  • Identifies and reports safety concerns in the compounding processes to pharmacists and/or supervisor.
  • Implements plans to reduce waste within the compounding area(s).
  • Understands and follows quarantine and sterility testing procedures as defined in USP standards for compounded medications and extended BUDs.
  • Completes other assigned tasks for certified pharmacy technicians, including medication order fulfillment, restocking, repackaging, answering telephone calls, medication delivery, and use of technology in the medication use system.
  • Demonstrates appropriate infection prevention processes and techniques.
  • Implements mitigating strategies for handling hazardous medications to protect oneself and the environment.
  • Maintains USP and Joint Commission compliance related to compounding oversight and quality standards.
  • Completes all assigned educational materials specific to compounding, including ASHP training videos on aseptic technique, safe handling of hazardous drugs, and non-sterile compounding.
  • Completes the comprehensive Technician Training and Competency Assessment Tool, including verbal review, assigned reading, observation/demonstration, and verbal/written testing.
  • Successfully completes and maintains aseptic skills tests, including periodic recertification, and passes required written compounding exams.
  • Completes technology reassessment and recertification as required, along with other ongoing training and competency assignments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required.
  • 3 years of experience preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Completion of all departmental required education for compounding services preferred.
  • Good moral character and adherence to ICARE values (equity, leadership, integrity, openness, respect, and accountability).

Qualifications

  • Completed ASHP-accredited training program or equivalent experience as a pharmacy technician upon hire required.
  • Certification from a nationally accredited pharmacy technician certification program (e.g., PTCB) and maintenance of ongoing education requirements upon hire required.
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician (PHRMTECH-R) license upon hire required.
