Position Information

The Department of Counseling Services is seeking a Licensed Professional Counselor(s) (LPC) to assist students in defining and accomplishing personal and academic goals. To provide counseling, including on-call crisis intervention, to assist students in overcoming specific personal, educational or behavioral problems that interfere with healthy living and success at the university. To support the development of students by helping all students enhance their growth potential and thereby benefit from their academic and social environment.

Work Tasks

  • To provide individual and group counseling, consultation, and outreach focused on developmental needs and issues of students.
  • Provide on-call crisis counseling and intervention support to students in need.
  • Provide psycho-education about anxiety, depression, stress, emotional regulation, relationships, eating concerns, substance abuse, sexual assault and other topics of concern to the welfare of students.
  • Support student adjustment and student learning in the residence hall through appropriate outreach and educational programs and services.
  • Support the training of the campus community related to suicide awareness and appropriate referral, listening skills, conflict management, crisis intervention and other topics as needed.
  • Provide consulting services as needed concerning student issues related to counseling, development and behavior management in the residential community.
  • Develops and maintains very positive and professional customer service and relations with all constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, administrators, other employees, other agency personnel and community members. Demonstrates a positive and professional attitude and treats everyone with dignity and respect. Fully supports the “Student’s First” value at CNU and routinely goes the extra mile in providing service. Completes all work in a timely, efficient and accurate manner.
  • Follow workplace safety regulations and adhere to applicable standards, processes, and programs established for your position.
  • Safety issues are reviewed and communicated to assure a safe and healthy workplace and a reduction in work related absence.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director to support office functions and services.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) related to position

Strong abilities in counseling, crisis response, outreach programming and communication. Knowledge concerning individual and group counseling theory and practice. Skills in providing individual and group counseling. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

Required Education

Must possess a master’s degree in counseling, counselor education, social work or clinical or counseling psychology by start date. Course work and appropriate training should include individual and group counseling, crisis response, psychological assessment, theories of personality, abnormal psychology or psychopathology, standards of ethical practice and substance abuse prevention. The successful candidate must be currently licensed or license eligible. If not currently licensed, the position requirement is to obtain Virginia licensure within one year of date of hire.

Additional Consideration - Education

Education beyond the master’s.

Experience Required

Experience in providing individual or group counseling. Experience in crisis counseling an intervention to include on-call response and emergency hospitalization procedures.

Additional Consideration - Experience

Experience counseling special populations to include those who are at-risk for suicide and victims of sexual assault and substance abuse. Experience working in a university counseling center.

Salary Information

$58,519 to $80,464, Commensurate with Education and Experience.
