Location: Fayetteville, North Carolina – Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, 3 VPN Surgical

About the Role

3 VPN is a 24-bed unit with all private rooms, operating on a track schedule. The team cares for adult and geriatric patients who do not require telemetry, critical drip infusions, or ventilator support. Patient ratio is 1:5. The care team includes Registered Nurses, a Clinical Educator, Nursing Assistants, Unit Secretaries, and Resource Nurses. New Graduate Nurses are accepted and welcome.

Common diagnoses and treatments include:

  • Bariatric surgeries (sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass)
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy
  • Laparoscopic appendectomy
  • GYN surgeries
  • Fetal demise
  • Urology surgeries
  • Breast surgeries
  • All abdominal/bowel surgeries
  • Incision & drainage/wound infections
  • General trauma surgeries

Responsibilities

  • Participates in assessment of patients
  • Collaborates with departmental and interdisciplinary groups in developing the patient plan of care
  • Follows patient’s plan of care while providing direct nursing care to assigned patients
  • Adjusts care based upon age-specific physiological needs of patients as directed by the Registered Nurse or other authorized person(s)
  • Maintains an accurate and relevant record of patient care
  • Administers medication as ordered by physician
  • Facilitates a safe environment
  • Recognizes life-threatening situations and responds appropriately
  • Maintains required competencies
  • Participates in Performance Improvement activities and monitors the quality of care
  • Establishes collaborative interpersonal relationships with other Health System staff
  • Supports patients in the practice of their cultural and spiritual beliefs within limits of the medical regimen
  • Actively participates in cost containment and completes accurate charging for patient services
  • Actively demonstrates responsibility concerning customer satisfaction, patient throughput, and hospital functional capacity through compliance with the Hospital Innovation Project (HIP), if applicable
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Current licensure in North Carolina as a Licensed Practical Nurse or Compact state licensure
  • BLS certification – American Heart Association
  • 1-2 years of related clinical experience preferred

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of age-specific physiological and psychosocial needs of adult and geriatric patients

Physical Requirements

  • Speech and auditory acuity for communication of patient needs
  • Visual acuity for observation of patients
  • Long periods of standing, walking, bending, and lifting
  • May involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material
