2026-27 School Year – 171 days/year, 7.5 hours/day

Purpose

The Licensed Practical Nurse provides direct nursing care activities to students with special health care needs, ensuring both educational and health care requirements are met within an assigned classroom. This role involves one-on-one student support, implementing health care plans, and documenting daily activities.

Responsibilities

  • Administers medication and specialized procedures (e.g., catheterization, suctioning, tube feeding) to identified students.
  • Communicates with teachers and health care professionals (e.g., District Registered Nurse, Speech Therapist, PTs, COTAs) to evaluate progress and implement IEP and Health Care Plan objectives.
  • Documents student daily activities, including behavior, health care services, use of special equipment, and on/off task times.
  • Implements, under supervision, plans designed by the IEP team and Health Care Plan to reinforce learning concepts.
  • Maintains special equipment required by students.
  • Models appropriate social behaviors, including conversation, manners, and interactions.
  • Monitors and documents students’ health-related activities (e.g., class schedule, toileting, medication, appetite).
  • Provides instructional assistance (e.g., math, science, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills) to support IEP goals.
  • Remains with a student at all times to ensure safety.
  • Reports daily health conditions of students to the supervising Registered Nurse and parents, if directed.
  • Responds to emergency situations or health emergencies to address immediate safety concerns.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

  • LPN License required.
  • Skills in performing technical tasks, adhering to safety practices, and maintaining accurate records.
  • Knowledge of basic math, technical reading, and age-appropriate activities for high-risk youth.
  • Ability to schedule activities, work with diverse individuals, maintain confidentiality, and work as part of a team.
  • Problem-solving skills to analyze issues and create action plans.
  • Physical demands include significant lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, frequent climbing, stooping, kneeling, and fine finger dexterity. The role requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing.
  • Job-related experience is required.
  • Community College and/or Vocational School degree in a job-related area.
  • Current CPR Certificate and Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.

Working Environment

The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard-free environment, though physical demands are significant.
