About the Role

Performs specialized licensed practical nursing work for Broward County's substance abuse program. Works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses and evaluates patients on admission and throughout treatment stay; obtains medical, surgical, and/or substance abuse and psychiatric history and elicits reason for seeking treatment.
  • Performs physical assessment including vital signs and observation of physical/mental status; performs medical, psychiatric and/or substance abuse screenings.
  • Renders practical nursing and health support services to program patients; provides personal care assistance to service patients as needed; monitors client behavior and general health; reports and records status.
  • Works from the orders directed by a physician; cosigns all orders; documentation and administration of oral, ophthalmic, otic, intramuscular, topical, transdermal, and subcutaneous medications.
  • Provides first aid and wound care as ordered.
  • Assesses and evaluates patients to recommend further medical and/or psychiatric intervention or referral to other healthcare facilities.
  • Follows agency procedures for control, storage, and administration of medications and for usage of medical supplies; orders medications and transcribes doctors' orders.
  • Provides information to doctors, counselors, dietary staff, and continued care with outside agencies, 911, Department of Health, or the court system.
  • Interfaces with other internal and external healthcare providers for coordination of care.
  • Obtains report from the previous shift on the status of each patient on the unit; keeps a record of any changes affecting patients and reports those changes to the oncoming shift; maintains a running tally of admissions and discharges for the shift.
  • Reviews treatment plans and participates in discharge/aftercare planning with nursing/clinical staff.
  • Assessment and documentation of status of Oxygen tank, Glucometers, Fridge temperatures, and hand sanitizer dispensers.
  • Education, administration, follow-up assessment of site, and documentation of MAT Vivitrol injections.
  • Participate and contribute to Quality Assurance practices by completing incident reports, tracking infections, medication errors, post-fall assessments, and chart auditing.
  • Scan and/or upload documentation to client electronic medical record.
  • Inventory medications brought in on admission, complete medication destruction according to facility policy and procedure.
  • Complete admission screening and assessment of clients including but not limited to: UDS/Pregnancy testing, client searches, CO2 testing, fetal doppler, and nursing assessments.
  • Inventory discharge medications received from pharmacy.
  • Provide discharge instructions and education to clients prior to discharge.
  • Attend staff meetings, shift change meetings, client staffing, and case conferences as assigned/requested.
  • Utilize electronic fax utility to receive and send documentation/orders as needed.
  • Collaborate and communicate via phone, email, and electronic health record inbox.
  • Facilitate Medical groups as assigned.

Requirements

  • Requires completion of course work from an accredited practical nursing education program.
  • Requires two (2) years' experience as a licensed practical nurse, including six (6) months experience in substance abuse and/or behavioral health nursing.
  • Licensed as a practical nurse by the State of Florida and current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification at time of application.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver's License.

Preferences

  • Associates, Bachelors, or Masters Degree in Nursing or Related Health Science.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Substance Abuse/Psychiatric/Behavioral Health Nursing Certification.
  • One (1) or more years experience with Medication Addiction Treatment (MAT) including injectables.
  • Bilingual.

Work Environment

Physical Demands: Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of the fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Unavoidable Hazards: Involves routine and frequent exposure to radiation; disease/pathogens.

Schedule

We are currently hiring for 3 different shifts; all shifts require availability to work alternating weekends.

  • 1st Shift: 6:00 AM – 4:00 PM – 10-hour shift, 4 days per week.
  • 2nd Shift: 2:00 PM – 12:00 AM – 10-hour shift, 4 days per week.
  • Overnight Shift: 10:00 PM – 6:30 AM – 5 days per week.

Pay

Salary Range for this position is $56,500 to $77,000.
