Licensed Practical Nurse
Job Summary
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN/LVN) provides direct patient care, medical readiness support, and administrative coordination services for Special Warfare (SW) students, Airmen, and Army personnel. The LPN works closely with Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) medical facilities, Squadron Flight Surgeons, healthcare providers, and support staff to ensure medical clearance, readiness, and compliance with applicable military medical standards.
Responsibilities
- Initiate, perform and complete assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations.
- Complete assigned patient care based on the patients conditions, use judgment in selecting the appropriate order and sequence of procedures and treatments, and accurately recognize, report and record relevant patient information.
- Observe, identify and respond to the patients needs for care, including medication, equipment-assisted care and patient/family education.
- Prepare and administer prescribed medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular and/or intravenous) and perform treatments according to established policies/procedures.
- Negotiate urgent or emergent patient care situations, seek assistance of the RN and/or MD/DO, and initiate appropriate emergency interventions as directed.
- Perform support duties for complex diagnostic tests and/or specialized practices or procedures, which include preparing the patient, assisting in the diagnostic examination, preparing and handling specialized instruments or other specialized equipment, and monitoring the patients condition before, during, and following the procedure.
- Aid with administrative tasks associated with patient care, such as appointment creation, scheduling, checking in patients, recording vital signs and other health information in the electronic health record, tracking patient status over the course of care, and maintaining regular reports used to monitor patient progression.
- Aid with reviewing, filing, and submitting medical documents required for students/patients to begin or continue training in a SW or Army course. For example, assist with submission of medical waivers and/or creation of waiver materials.
- Orient peers and ancillary personnel to unit policies and procedures, skills, and standards of practice.
- Integrate healthy work environment principles that result in improved patient healthcare delivery, education of patients and their families, and employee satisfaction.
Requirements
- Education: Graduate from an accredited community college, junior college, college, university, or vocational nursing program approved by the appropriate state agency. Nursing program must be accredited by the Commission on Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) or another accreditation body acceptable under applicable contract requirements. Minimum education requirement: Certificate in Practical Nursing or Vocational Nursing.
- Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Licenses: Current, active, full, and unrestricted Practical Nurse (LPN) or Vocational Nurse (LVN) license. License must be maintained in good standing in any U.S. state, territory, or jurisdiction. No limitations, restrictions, stipulations, or pending adverse actions are permitted throughout employment.
- Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of practical or vocational nursing experience following graduation from an accredited nursing program. Experience in military medicine, flight medicine, occupational health, preventive health assessments, or outpatient clinical settings is preferred. Experience utilizing electronic health records and medical readiness tracking systems is highly desirable.

Schedule
Duty hours will be designated by the course requirements and may include nights. Training personnel hours shall not be constrained to a standard 8:00am to 4:00pm or 9:00am to 5:00pm workday.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the clinic during scheduled shifts. Ability to lift and carry medical supplies and equipment up to 25 pounds. Manual dexterity sufficient to perform nursing procedures and operate medical equipment. Ability to work in a clinical environment with exposure to infectious diseases and bodily fluids while adhering to infection control protocols.
