Licensed Optician
Job Description
Licensed Opticians are responsible for selling & dispensing eyewear and eyewear accessories to patients. They ensure patients are fitted with the right-size frames that fit their needs and lifestyle and dispense lenses with correct prescription and measurements.
They deliver extraordinary experiences to each patient. They provide patients with a complete understanding of their customized recommendations for products and services. They custom fit glasses and precisely place prescriptions in lenses. They develop their own clientele through outstanding service and referrals.
They assist coworkers with difficult or complex areas of product needs and prescriptions. They keep current on company/industry products and procedures, manufacturer rebates, and types of lenses and frames available. They take and return patient calls, update patients on the status of their order, and resolve order issues as necessary.
- Retrieve patient charts and electronic health records.
- Aid in selecting frames, lens types, and lens treatments based on specific patient needs and facial measurements.
- Provide education on proper eyeglass and contact lens care.
- Take and interpret prescriptions written by optometrists and ophthalmologists.
- Create work orders for lab technicians, specifying information on lenses needed.
- Follow up on all pending orders, verifying they are within time guidelines and informing patients of status if delays occur.
- Notify patients when orders arrive from the lab/manufacturers.
- Dispense glasses by inspecting the product, checking for proper fit, adjusting if necessary, and asking for feedback.
- Adjust eyewear to ensure visual acuity, proper fit, and patient comfort.
- Use various tools for eyewear adjustments and repairs.
- Communicate with technicians and/or store managers, providing additional patient information or asking for an order status.
- Inspect the final product to ensure there are no flaws; clean and polish lenses using cloths and solvents.
- Clean and organize frame boards, displays, mirrors, work bench, office area, bathroom, and breakroom, maintaining overall cleanliness and visual appeal of the store.
- Restock retail boards with new merchandise.
- Understand product issues and analyze any problems. Thoroughly and accurately answer patients' questions regarding insurance, warranty, products, materials, services, pricing, upgrades, promotions, etc.
- Sell miscellaneous products such as cleaners, contact lens supplies, sunglasses, safety glasses, etc.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma
- State Licensure
- Optical dispensing experience
- One-year experience working as an Optician strongly preferred
- Experience with HIPAA requirements preferred
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
- Excellent customer service skills and pleasant demeanor, experience with sales preferred
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
- Dependability and punctuality
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs, bend, kneel, and stand up to 8 hours a day
