Position Summary

This position is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the work of survey crews and technicians engaged in surveying the Earth's surface. The role involves determining precise locations and measurements of points, elevations, lines, areas, and contours for purposes such as construction, mapmaking, utility location, subsurface utility engineering (SUE), land division, and land titling. The successful candidate will promote safe work practices, evaluate team performance, and recommend improvements to achieve desired results. This individual will also represent the company in meetings and conferences with clients and prospective clients. The ideal candidate is a proactive communicator and change agent who can effectively balance employee needs with business objectives to deliver integrated solutions.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead advisor and supervisor for surveying operations and personnel.
  • Cookordinate survey findings with engineering, right-of-way, and utility coordination teams, clients, and other stakeholders.
  • Define the scope of work, job objectives, and man-hour budgets for projects, in collaboration with other project managers and supervisors.
  • Act as a liaison within and outside the organization, independently managing technical matters.
  • Research survey records, including prior survey data, maps, deeds, and physical/site evidence to collect necessary information.
  • Make independent decisions regarding survey methods and resolve complex surveying problems.
  • Represent the company in conferences and meetings to resolve key issues and ensure successful project planning and coordination.
  • Plan and manage surveying projects involving unique or high-impact challenges.
  • Analyze project objectives and technical specifications to prepare or guide the preparation of survey proposals.
  • Schedule, assign, and manage survey projects within the organization.
  • Prepare or oversee the preparation of survey-related data, charts, maps, plots, and documentation.
  • Train and direct assistants and junior staff in fieldwork and drafting activities.
  • Develop criteria for survey methodologies and procedures.

Required Skills

  • Strong grasp of mathematical concepts including probability, statistical inference, plane and solid geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts (fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions) in practical contexts.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree (preferred) in Land Surveying, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in land surveying and/or holding a Professional License.
  • Professional Land Surveyor license in Kentucky or ability to obtain one.
  • Proficiency with Trimble instruments, MicroStation, AutoCAD, Carlson, and Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred (Nice to Have)

  • NCEES Certification.
  • Experience with KYDOT Route Surveying.
