About the role

Gold Coast Beauty Spa by Shanzo invites licensed Illinois Hair Stylists and Cosmetologists to provide professional hair services in its Gold Coast salon as a 1099 independent contractor. This opportunity suits stylists who take pride in technical work, create a polished client experience, and aim to grow a loyal book of business through rebooking, referrals, networking, personal promotion, and long‑term client relationships. An established clientele is welcome but not required, and the salon may provide salon‑generated client opportunities. Services are delivered via a 1099 arrangement with a 50/50 split on eligible hair‑service revenue; you keep your tips. Appointments and payment processing are managed through Clover, and you work in a professional salon workspace in Chicago’s Gold Coast.

Responsibilities

• Perform professional hair services within the scope of your license, training, experience, and demonstrated proficiency.
• Consult with clients about their hair goals and recommend appropriate services.
• Create a consistent, welcoming, and high‑quality salon experience.
• Develop and retain clientele through rebooking, referrals, outreach, networking, social media, and other promotional activity.
• Keep appointments and client information accurate in Clover.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and properly sanitized service area.
• Follow applicable Illinois licensing, sanitation, infection‑control, and safety requirements.
• Communicate professionally with clients and represent both your independent business and the salon responsibly.
• Offer services such as haircuts and trims, blowouts, silk presses, thermal styling, shampoo/conditioning/hair treatments, single‑process color, highlights, balayage, corrective color, natural hair styling and protective styles, relaxers, smoothing services, texture services, formal/bridal/special‑event styling, and hair extensions (when supported by demonstrated training and proficiency).

Requirements

• Active Illinois Cosmetology License.
• Strong technical ability in one or more hair‑service categories.

• Professional portfolio or social media page that showcases your work.
• Working knowledge of sanitation, product handling, and infection‑control practices.
• Strong consultation, communication, and client‑service skills.
• Ability to independently promote services and build, manage, and retain clientele.

Pay

Compensation is commission‑based: a 50/50 split on eligible hair‑service revenue, plus you keep your tips. Estimated average earnings are approximately $30 per completed service hour or about $1,200 per week, depending on completed service volume and clientele. Commission earnings are uncapped but not guaranteed. As a 1099 independent contractor, you are responsible for federal, state, and local taxes, including self‑employment taxes.
