RESPONSIBLE TO:
Building Principal
General Responsibilities
- Maintain a functional library program in the building.
- Carry out ongoing reviews of the library collection in the school and balance the collection based on the needs of the building.
- Maintain an up-to-date inventory of equipment and materials and regularly discard obsolete and worn materials and equipment from the Library Media Center.
- Promote the use of print, electronic, and other non-print resources throughout the building.
- Prepare and maintain the Library budget in conjunction with the building principal.
- Evaluate, select, and requisition new materials for the Library Media Center.
- Consult with teachers on the selection and acquisition of books, materials, and digital media for the building's collection.
- Stay current on all types of educational materials in electronic as well as print media, and remain up-to-date on trends and practices regarding their use.
- Aid in the care and operation of equipment.
- Organize the storage and handling of equipment and materials for availability, convenience, and effective use.
- Serve as an instructional resource consultant and information specialist to teachers and students.
- Support teacher instructional plans to coordinate and integrate effectively library services across the curriculum.
- Provide group instruction and individual user guidance for locating resources and developing research techniques.
- Provide orientation for students in how to retrieve, evaluate, and use information.
- Promote literacy and the enjoyment of reading.
- Train users to develop searching and retrieval skills to obtain information from selected online and network databases.
- Create a library media center environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students, and promote appropriate conduct of students using the library facilities.
- Actively participate in library professional associations on the local, regional, and state levels.
- Effectively communicate with building and district administrators and other library media specialists.
- Notify faculty and students of new materials, services, and equipment.
- Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the library media program and implement changes based on the findings.
- Attend professional workshops, conferences, and seminars to gain knowledge of new developments and incorporate the most appropriate concepts into the Library Media Center program.
- Process and organize all media according to accepted district procedures.
- Understand and operate computer systems for research, circulation of media, and collection management.
- Produce and duplicate media adhering to copyright laws and inform staff and students of copyright laws.
- Supervise Library Aides / Aides in the performance of their duties.
