About the Role

Performs responsible work in the children, young adult, or adult departments of the Thomasville Library. This position involves circulation, programming, material acquisition, and leadership, with a focus on providing customer support in circulation and reference services.

Responsibilities

  • Works at the circulation desk checking materials in and out; answers telephones and assists patrons.
  • Notifies patrons of overdue books and fines; collects fees and fines.
  • Registers patrons for new or replacement library cards.
  • Promotes new materials and determines when they rotate off the new shelves.
  • Answers patrons’ questions regarding reference materials.
  • Registers patrons for computer usage and assists with computer applications.
  • Assists patrons in finding research materials and provides basic readers’ advisory for all age groups.
  • Counts the library’s nightly deposits.
  • Shelves books and maintains shelves for accuracy and neatness.
  • Maintains current knowledge of juvenile/young adult books, authors, and trends in library services.
  • Maintains an inviting young adult area with current displays.
  • Plans, schedules, and performs programs for young adults (6th–12th grade), including Summer Reading programming.
  • Plans, schedules, and facilitates TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meetings and events; recruits and coordinates volunteers.
  • Collaborates with local schools and/or community organizations to perform outreach services, including book checkout and programming.
  • Adheres to the department’s safety rules and regulations.
  • Supervises staff and operations of the library in the absence of the Library Manager III and Librarian.
  • May open and/or close the library.
  • Performs light clerical duties.
  • May plan, schedule, or perform programs for children.
  • Helps to plan, market, and implement library programming.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Ability to assist with planning, implementing, and conducting library outreach programs.
  • Ability to select appropriate materials for patrons of varying reading levels.
  • General knowledge of children’s/young adult literature, reader interest levels, and books/authors of interest to children of all ages.
  • Skill in storytelling and/or producing crafts.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to multi-task while providing excellent customer service.
  • Thorough knowledge of the library’s collection, automated circulation system, and organization, policies, and procedures.
  • General knowledge of library techniques, systems, tools, and age-appropriate materials.
  • General knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and composition.
  • Ability to organize work, exercise sound judgment, and work independently.
  • Ability to operate standard and electronic equipment.
  • Ability to handle routine and unusual situations related to patrons and the general public.
  • Ability to make accurate numerical calculations.
  • Ability to use reference materials and develop research strategies using a variety of media.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with all patrons and the general public.
  • Ability to lead others and establish effective relationships with co-workers, community organizations, vendors, schools, and the public.
  • General knowledge of safety procedures and policies, including handling emergency situations.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to perform basic life operational support functions such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Close visual acuity required for tasks such as preparing and analyzing data, working on a computer terminal, reading, inspecting small defects, using measurement devices, or assembling parts.
  • Visual acuity required to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of assigned work.
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, including atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
  • Required to function in narrow aisles or passageways.
  • May be in contact with potentially infectious bodily fluids during the performance of duties.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited 4-year college with a bachelor’s degree in Educational Media, English, History, Social Sciences, or Humanities (or similar discipline).
  • Some supervisory and public library experience preferred or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver License.

Pay

$19.28 - $24.58 per hour. Starting salary based on qualifications and experience.
