The Richmond City Justice Center Services Division is seeking candidates for the position of Librarian at the Richmond City Justice Center. This at-will position is open until filled.

About the Role

The Librarian is responsible for the overall operation of the inmate library, ensuring compliance with the Minimum Standards for Local Richmond City Justice Centers and Lock-ups and the Richmond Sheriff Office Standard Operating Procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the library in accordance with established standards and procedures.
  • Ensure the library is stocked with a minimum of 200 books and 100 magazines at all times, including current periodicals.
  • Act as a resource for inmates needing assistance with checking out materials, books, and completing letters and forms.
  • Maintain an accurate log of all visits to POD areas requiring library services.
  • Oversee the computerized inmate checkout/return system and ensure timely overdue notices.
  • Prepare a monthly report for the Major of Services detailing library usage, book inventory, purchases, and expenditures.
  • Serve as the Richmond City Justice Center Historian by maintaining a scrapbook of articles and topics related to the Richmond Sheriff’s Office.
  • Manage and account for a $500 monthly operating budget, submitting expense reports and receipts to the Administration Assistant to the Sheriff.
  • Explain new policies and procedures to inmates and the public on a monthly basis.
  • Initiate daily attendance sheets.
  • Review and authorize eligibility of pre-trial offenders to use law materials for trial and appeal preparation.
  • Perform additional duties as directed by the Major of Services, Sheriff, or designee.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science.
  • Three (3) years of experience as a librarian.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Preferred experience as a librarian in a criminal justice environment.
