About the role
The Family Graduation Advocate Liaison I provides services to a specific caseload of WCSD families to monitor their child's academic progress, access support services, effectively communicate with teachers and other school staff in order to support students to remain on the pathway to graduation.
Responsibilities
- Supports school-site and central office personnel by working primarily with a designated caseload of families to monitor academic progress and promote on-track graduation.
- Conducts targeted outreach to the designated caseload of families of students identified as at risk of not graduating.
- Collaborates with school administration and counselors to identify targeted families and build the caseload for the school year.
- Works in partnership with counselors to empower families to support their child's academic achievement by setting high expectations at home and understanding their child's progress with grades, credit attainment, and attendance.
- Supports families in building the skills needed to navigate the web-based Parent Portal and other key school platforms.
- Empowers families to monitor their child's grades, attendance, and assessments by utilizing the web-based parent portal.
- Works with school leadership including administration, teachers, and counselors to provide individualized support of families and efforts towards pathways to graduation.
- Serves as a liaison between the school and students with their families to assist in resolving student issues that interfere with academic progress.
- Works with students to let them know of the resources available to their families at the school and build academic partnerships between the students, families, and school site staff.
- May participate in various advisory group meetings and school committees such as Professional Learning Communities or Academic Leadership Teams acts as liaison between the school, home, and community to promote academic support of students and enhance communication between staff, families, and the community.
- Serves as an active member of the School Improvement (SIP) Team and recruits and supports families to serve on the SIP Team.
- Collaborates with other key district personnel on family engagement such as staff from: Team Up-21st Century, Title III, Title VII, and early childhood education when applicable.
- Methods of communication with families may include but not limited to making and distributing posters and flyers, surveys, direct contact, Connect Ed messaging, updating social media sites and posting on school's website.
- Enters and monitors data on academic supports provided to all the families they support (including families that are not part of the caseload) as tracked in the student information system.
- Participates in ongoing evaluation efforts of both school and district family engagement initiatives.
- Connects families to district and community resources.
- Serves as a cultural broker, supporting families from diverse cultural backgrounds in navigating the educational system. May serve as an interpreter and/or translator when requested for the families they are supporting.
- May conduct home visits relative to family engagement and other means of outreach to hard-to-reach families.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; some college experience is desirable, AND
- Two (2) years of experience with students or families in school, or community agencies. Bilingual is preferred but not required.
Compensation
Grade 18
Sch A: $16.76 (entry step)
Sch B: $20.16 (entry step)
Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year. New employees hired by Washoe County School District are normally placed on the entry step of the grade of the position. View the salary schedules here.

Please be advised health insurance premiums are paid by employees at a prorated percent for those working less than full time.
New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.
