Duties And Responsibilities
LEGAL SECRETARY I VARIOUS SECTIONS
- Takes and transcribes dictation
- Takes minutes of meetings
- Typing and proofreading documents
- Maintaining databases, filing systems, and appointment calendars
- Answering inquiries from the public or employees of other agencies
- Ordering office supplies
- Assisting with the general office workload
- Learning all of the functions of the office and completing other duties as assigned
- Additional assignment specific responsibilities may apply
Requirements
- Pass a spelling test with no more than five (5) errors
- One year performing clerical or secretarial duties
- Proficient in Microsoft Word
- Knowledge of legal and administrative procedures, and sources of information
- Able to maintain the status of cases being handled
- Able to type and proofread accurately
- Pays close attention to detail
- Able to work under pressure with minimal supervision
- Can perform in a team environment
- Reliable attendance and punctuality
- Able to lift up to 25 lbs.
Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of state and federal court rules
- Litigation document preparation under the California Court system’s filing requirement and procedures including electronic filings

Career Path
This position is eligible to automatically promote to Legal Secretary II ($67,505 - $98,637) after 2 years of satisfactory performance. See MOU 3 for details.
Retirement Benefits
Employees participate in the Los Angeles City Employees’ Retirement System (LACERS), which includes mandatory employee pension contributions through payroll deduction. The City also contributes toward the employee’s retirement benefit. Contribution rates are established by the applicable retirement system an may vary based on employee classification, membership status, and other factors.
Current Location
Position is subject to assignment at any location of the Office of the Los Angeles City Attorney. This position requires regular onsite work.
Employer-provided parking
Employer-provided parking is limited and may not be available for this classification. Employees may be responsible for securing and paying for parking at nearby facilities.
