Legal Counsel, U.S. Commercial Operations
About the role
The Legal Counsel, U.S. Commercial Operations at Circle K is a trusted and agile business partner who identifies legal risks in a timely, pragmatic, and commercially focused manner to support growth and make customers' lives easier while safeguarding the company's assets.
Responsibilities
- Draft, negotiate, and review a variety of domestic and international commercial agreements, including marketing, merchandising, manufacture, transportation, supply chain, technology, licensing, fuel, consulting, and other operational agreements.
- Provide practical solutions-based legal counsel to various national and international business stakeholders on a wide variety of legal and business issues.
- Aid in the creation, implementation, and refinement of forms, processes, procedures, and systems to support the effective delivery of enterprise commercial legal support.
- Work cross-functionally with teams across the company to analyze legal risks, devise creative solutions, and develop trusted advisor relationships.
- Educate business partners with regard to key legal, risk, competition, compliance, data privacy, and regulatory considerations, both in day-to-day interactions and in structured training sessions.
- Maintain an understanding of Circle K’s strategic objectives, products, and services.
- Monitor and communicate legal developments that would impact the company’s business lines to proactively help business partners “see around corners”.
Requirements
- Bar admission and license to practice law in the U.S., member in good standing.
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
- 3-5 years of experience (in-house and law firm).
- Experience in structuring, drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a variety of agreements and identifying key issues and risks, preferably with experience in general commercial transactions and business counseling.
- Prior experience advising retail clients is a plus.
Education and Skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with capability to effectively communicate complex legal concepts to non-legal audiences.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with an aptitude to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Practical, business-oriented approach with an ability to effectively balance risk mitigation with business needs.
- Passion for legal process and system development and improvement.
- Comfortable advising on a broad and shifting array of retail legal issues, including the enthusiasm to counsel on new and trending areas of law.
- Ability to work comfortably while processes and systems are being established.
- Collaborative spirit with a sense of humor.
