About the role

The legal assistant will provide legal and administrative assistance to the legal department of the LDF Business Development Corporation (BDC). The Legal department supports the LDF BDC, a multimillion-dollar arm of the Lac Du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and maintain the filing system for the BDC Legal Department.
  • Provide administrative support to the General Counsel.
  • Prepare proposed resolutions for the Council and/or the Board of Directors of the BDC, complete with any necessary attachments.
  • Facilitate professional communication between the Legal Department and other departments within the BDC.
  • Conduct legal research projects as assigned.
  • Create and maintain charts, tables, and databases tracking pertinent operational and legal information of BDC entities.
  • Perform additional duties as required; responsibilities may change with or without notice.

Requirements

  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective time-management and organization skills.
  • Ability to be proactive, self-motivated, and self-directed.
  • Ability to operate calmly in a fast-paced environment and work well under pressure.
  • Proficiency in navigating multiple computer software programs and applications.
  • Ability to work and collaborate in a team environment.
  • Perform all duties with acute attention to detail.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent.
  • Ability to type 50 wpm with accuracy.
  • 2 years of experience working with Microsoft Office and Outlook.
  • 2 years of experience as a Legal Assistant, Paralegal, or similar role.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree or higher as a Paralegal or related field of study.
  • 3+ years of experience in a law office or other courtroom setting.
  • Experience with Westlaw or LexisNexis.
  • Native American preference will be applied to hiring as defined in Title 25, U.S. Code, Chapter 14, Subchapter V, subsection 273 & 274.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, scanners, and copiers. While largely sedentary, the position requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, and the ability to lift 25 pounds safely.

Schedule

This is a full-time position with 40 hours per week expected. Days of work are primarily Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM. Attendance at all mandatory meetings and participation in trainings is required. Occasional travel is expected.
