About the Opportunity
The Legal and Deficiency Recovery Manager role is responsible for establishing and leading the post charge-off recovery program. This position develops criteria and compliance frameworks to manage legal escalations and deficiency collections, ensuring all consumer interactions meet legal standards. The role contributes by transforming previously uncollected balances into recoveries, maintaining regulatory compliance, and overseeing third-party vendors and outside counsel.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement qualification criteria for legal escalation of deficiency accounts.
- Monitor and audit legal escalation processes and compliance logs.
- Review and approve settlement letters and deficiency collection scripts for legal compliance.
- Manage legal and compliance reporting, including quarterly updates to the Board.
- C Conduct FDCPA and UDAAP reviews and maintain current compliance as regulations evolve.
- Maintain a state-by-state legal viability map for deficiency collections.
- Ensure compliance with ECOA, bankruptcy filings, and SCRA requirements.
- Coordinate responses to regulatory inquiries and consumer complaints.
- Develop and deliver compliance training for post charge-off staff.
- Vet and oversee third-party collection agencies and BPO partners.
- Manage outside counsel relationships and monitor legal case outcomes and costs.
- Review vendor contracts for compliance provisions.
- Develop and maintain policies and procedures for post charge-off collections.
- Manage collections-related litigation and report material developments.
- Identify and address process gaps to reduce legal exposure and improve recovery.
- Provide legal and compliance guidance to collections teams.
- Hire and develop direct reports as the program expands.
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in legal operations, compliance management, or collections oversight within consumer lending, auto finance, or third-party collection agencies.
- Proven ability to manage compliance frameworks and legal escalation processes.
- Experience with FDCPA, UDAAP, ECOA, bankruptcy, SCRA, and other relevant regulations.
- Skilled in vendor and outside counsel management.
- Strong policy development and process improvement capabilities.
Pay Range and Compensation Package
Full total compensation package at $130,000
