About the role

This is a non-tenure track position as Lecturer or Teaching Assistant Professor in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Exceptionally qualified individuals with significant teaching experience may be considered at higher ranks.

The Department of Nuclear Engineering is part of the Tickle College of Engineering, which has the fastest growing PhD program among the Top 40 public colleges of engineering. The department has a diverse research portfolio and is the largest Nuclear Engineering PhD program in the United States, with over 120 PhD students and over $17M in annual research expenditures. It also has the second largest undergraduate program, according to ASEE. In 2021, the department moved into a new $129M building housing more than 23 new nuclear engineering laboratories.

UTK maintains close collaborations with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Y-12 and is located near the Great Smoky Mountains. The department is committed to cultivating work/life balance and a family-friendly work environment.

Knoxville is within 200 miles of four major metropolitan areas hosting larger cultural and entertainment events.

Responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in nuclear engineering-related subjects.
• Provide service to the department, college, university, and community.
• Contribute to existing nuclear engineering courses and develop new teaching avenues, with a focus on nuclear fission engineering.
• Teach foundational nuclear engineering and/or nuclear power areas, including the new Nuclear Power Engineering minor.
• Develop collaborative teaching activities.

Requirements

• For appointment as Teaching Assistant Professor: a doctorate in Nuclear Engineering or a closely related field by the effective date of appointment.
• For appointment as Lecturer: a master’s in Nuclear Engineering or a closely related field by the effective date of appointment.
• Demonstrated teaching success that complements existing University of Tennessee strengths.
• Ability to contribute to the diversity and intercultural goals of the university.
