About the Role

The purpose of this role is to conduct independent research and deliver excellent teaching in the School of Mathematics and Statistics. The Lecturer (Level B) / Senior Lecturer (Level C) is expected to carry out activities to develop their scholarly research in areas that align with the School’s research strengths, engage in professional activities nationally and internationally, and actively contribute to the School’s teaching activities across undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

There are 2 roles available in the growing area of operator-theoretic methods for dynamical systems, spanning theory to applications, in connection with the establishment of a world-class research cluster led by Scientia Professor Gary Froyland. The theoretical focus includes fundamental research in relevant fields, potentially linking to pure mathematics, while the applied focus involves developing and implementing operator-theoretic methods in dynamic data analysis.

Responsibilities

Level B:

  • Actively carry out high-quality and high-impact research in areas aligning with the School’s research strengths, aiming for publication in influential and high-impact scholarly journals.
  • Work collaboratively and independently on research grant proposals and applications to national competitive grant agencies and other funding bodies.
  • Develop research collaborations within the School, the University, and nationally and internationally, including industrial collaborations.
  • Disseminate research findings at seminars and conferences within the School, UNSW, nationally, and internationally.
  • Supervise undergraduate (honours) and postgraduate coursework capstone projects, as well as PhD and Masters research students.
  • Contribute to the design of programs and courses, and deliver high-quality teaching using appropriate pedagogical methodologies and technologies.
  • Teach mathematics and non-mathematics students at all levels, including Honours and Masters courses.
  • Actively participate in School activities and take on leadership roles.
  • Undertake administrative duties as specified by the Head of School and participate in School, Faculty, and/or University committees.
  • Engage with industry and the community to develop productive relationships, attract funding, and participate in professional activities.
  • Collaborate with peers across the Faculty and UNSW, and contribute to mentoring other staff.
  • Align with and demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.
  • Comply with all health and safety policies and procedures.

Level C (in addition to the above):

  • Play a significant role in research projects, including leadership of a research team where appropriate.
  • Obtain research income from nationally competitive research grants and research end-users as a member or leader.
  • Apply critically reflective teaching practices and provide assessment and feedback at both course and program levels.
  • Attract peer recognition and establish research networks at the international level.

Requirements

Level B:

  • A PhD or equivalent qualification in relevant mathematical sciences.
  • Demonstrated research ability in an area of mathematics aligning with the School’s research directions.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence.
  • Evidence of research collaborations.
  • Capacity to conduct productive research at an international level.
  • Strong publication record in top, peer-reviewed journals.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality external grant applications.
  • Ability to supervise PhD students and willingness to undertake compliance and supervisor training.
  • Experience in student supervision, including Honours, Masters, and vacation scholar projects.
  • High-level oral and written communication skills, with the ability to network effectively and interact with diverse students and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to deliver high-quality and innovative teaching and student experiences.
  • Track record of significant involvement with the profession and/or industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines, and build effective relationships.
  • Understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives, and values.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to relevant training.

Level C (in addition to the above):

  • A substantial record of publications in top, peer-reviewed journals.
  • Strong track record of successful postgraduate supervision.
  • Strong dedication to independent research and research leadership.
  • Demonstrated record of competitive external research funding.
  • Experience in teaching and learning using a range of pedagogical approaches and educational technologies, including course and program development and delivery at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels.
  • Excellent leadership skills in community and professional engagement.

Pay

Level B: $133,000 - $156,000 per annum
Level C: $161,000 - $185,000 per annum
Plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading.

Schedule

Continuing, full-time (35 hours per week).
