About the role

The Penn State School of Theatre in the College of Arts & Architecture invites applications for a one year full-time Non-Tenure Line Lecturer in Dance, for the nationally renowned BFA Musical Theatre Program.

Responsibilities

• Teaching responsibilities include beginning tap, advanced tap, and Musical Theatre jazz dance classes.
• A choreography assignment on a musical is also anticipated.
• Additional faculty responsibilities include participation in student recruitment.

Requirements

• A master’s degree or equivalent in professional experience as a choreographer/dancer.
• Significant professional experience in dance, performance and teaching or choreography.
• The ability to effectively teach and mentor students with a wide range of technical abilities, physical capabilities, and prior dance training.
• The ability to differentiate instruction, support individual learning needs, and cultivate an environment where all students can develop technical proficiency, creative expression, and professional readiness.
• Evidence of working collectively to cultivate a culture that supports success and enables all members of a college community to thrive.
• A comprehensive knowledge of the musical theatre repertoire.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous university teaching experience.
• Connections and recognition within the professional musical theatre industry.

About Musical Theatre at Penn State

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre at Penn State is a professional training program whose mission is to train young artists so that they may thrive in the profession and enjoy a successful and lifelong artistic journey. Throughout their time at Penn State, students share a positive, professional, and dedicated attitude as artists and humans that allow them to enter the industry ready to contribute to the future of Musical Theatre. The Musical Theatre faculty is made up of artists dedicated to both the profession and the academy, and who bring our students Broadway, national tour, regional theatre, and film and television experience. With a ratio of 13 faculty to 48 students, alongside 10 wellness providers, the training is individualized, specific, and rigorous. The program offers signature initiatives including a New Musicals Initiative that commissions musical theatre writers from New York each year, a Master Class Series that connects students with professionals while they are still in training, and a Wellness Center in the areas of Mental, Physical, Vocal, and Nutritional Health.
