Lecturer in Journalism, Department of Communication (Spring 2027)
Position description
The Department of Communication within the School of Social Sciences at the University of California, San Diego, invites applications for an ongoing appointment at the Lecturer (Unit 18-Non-Senate Faculty) level. We seek a dynamic industry professional committed to preparing students for success in today's rapidly evolving news media environment. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate introductory and advanced courses in journalism (including writing, reporting, ethics, and professionalization), be involved with ongoing course development in the journalism curriculum, advise students on academic matters, and maintain an active interest in changes and advances within the field of journalism.
Candidates should be prepared to teach courses such as COMM 115J: Journalistic Writing, Reporting, and Research, COMM 30: Digital Media Literacy, COMM 152: News Media and Politics, COMM 120N: News Media Workshop. Descriptions can be found in the Department of Communication Course Catalog.
Potential areas of specialization may include but are not limited to sports journalism, environmental journalism, public interest journalism, data journalism, investigative journalism, solutions journalism, arts & media, technology, journalistic ethics, and serving and covering underrepresented communities.
Qualifications
- Masters Degree in Journalism OR 3+ years experience teaching at the university level.
- Candidates must also have 5 years of professional experience in journalism at the time of application submission. Professional experience may consist of time spent in reporting, editing, and/or producing, in print, radio, television, podcasts, digital news, or other emerging areas of journalism, either in the U.S. or internationally.
- Evidence of strong teaching experience at the university level. The ability to teach multiplatform and/or multimedia journalism.
