This learning specialist position works in the Built4Life Student-Athlete Center under the supervision of the Director of Olympic Sport Academics, focusing on helping student-athletes develop strong learning strategies, study skills, and time management to become independent learners.

Responsibilities

  • Meet one-on-one with assigned student-athletes 1-3 times per week to identify individual academic support needs.
  • Write goal-oriented action plans for academic improvement and personal progress for assigned student-athletes.
  • Teach, model, demonstrate, monitor good academic behaviors, learning skills, and study strategies.
  • Be available 2-3 evenings during the week to work with assigned students.
  • Recommend students for possible psychoeducational testing as needed.
  • Monitor at-risk students’ academic progress on a daily basis.
  • Write weekly academic reports including current grades, missing assignments, and other pertinent academic behaviors.
  • Collaborate with other Learning Specialists, mentors, and Advisor staff to create academic support plans for student-athletes.
  • Communicate with faculty about academic progress for assigned students.
  • Build positive relationships with Built4Life and athletic department staff, academic team members, and coaches.
  • Develop and maintain strong communication with coaches about academic progress for assigned students.
  • Assist with tutor recruitment, training, and monitoring as needed.
  • Assist with hiring, training, and monitoring of student mentors.
  • Contribute to the Academic team’s knowledge of current best practices and effective academic skills for college students, with an emphasis on at-risk student-athletes.
  • Collaborate with nonacademic staff within the Built4Life Student Athlete Center on student career choices, belonging issues, service opportunities, and mental health.
  • Attend weekly academic team meetings and monthly all-staff meetings.
  • Work on various projects or tasks as assigned by the Olympic Sport Director of Academics.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, special education, sociology, or other related field, or an equivalent combination of education/experience.
  • 1 year of experience in an educational and/or academic support setting.
  • Willingness to uphold and live by the university's Honor Code.

Pay Level: 51. Typical starting pay depends on experience.
