Learning Scientist (Mathematics)

About the Role

As a Learning Scientist, Early Numeracy at NWEA®, a division of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, you will leverage your expertise in how young children learn mathematics to build models representing the development of early math knowledge and skills. You will identify student learning pathways, design ontologies and knowledge graphs, and conduct research to evaluate product effectiveness in PreK-5 classrooms. This role involves close collaboration with cross-functional teams to translate learning science insights into evidence-based product experiences for students and educators.

Responsibilities

• Deep Understanding of Mathematics Learning: Demonstrate expertise in how students develop mathematical knowledge, including the Standards for Mathematical Practice. Design and develop math learning progressions and knowledge maps that reflect skill development over time.
• Policy and Educational Landscape Understanding: Translate educational standards into measurable student skills, understand the impact of evolving standards on learning models, and ensure frameworks remain accurate and relevant.
• Research and Analytical Skills: Apply qualitative or quantitative methods to educational data, interpret student performance data, and use tools like R, Python, ATLAS.ti, or NVivo. Take an AI-first approach to work processes.
• Collaboration and Delivery of Value: Communicate effectively with stakeholders, manage learning science aspects of projects, and work independently or with teams to deliver results.

Qualifications

• Education & Experience: PhD in developmental psychology, mathematics education, curriculum and instruction, cognitive psychology, or related field with a mathematics focus. Expertise in education trends (e.g., grade bands, classroom technology). Early-grades teaching experience is a plus.
• Research & Analytical Skills: Strong background in qualitative or quantitative research methods, familiarity with mathematics content standards, and proficiency in tools like R, Python, or qualitative analysis software.
• Communication & Collaboration: Effective communication skills for stakeholder engagement, project management experience, and comfort with agile processes.
• Personal Attributes: Drive, flexibility, bridge-building abilities, imagination, and inclusivity.

• Collaboration via conference calls and online meetings

Pay

Salary range: $95,000 – $105,000

Location: Remote (Anywhere in the United States)
