Since 1984, Larkin Street Youth Services has helped more than 75,000 young adults in San Francisco with outreach, shelter, housing, education, employment, healthcare, and other services. Today, Larkin Street is the largest provider of housing and services to homeless youth in the Bay Area, serving 1,500 youth annually and operating or partnering to provide more than 500 emergency shelter, transitional, supportive, and subsidy-based housing beds across San Francisco. The Wellness Department at Larkin Street offers a wide range of services to support young people, including onsite drop-in counseling, weekly individual therapy (in-person and virtual), and weekly psychoeducational groups (e.g., Healing Meditation, Crash Out, Boyz II Men, Alphabet Soup). Serving over 85% BIPOC (including 45% Black) and over 30% LGBTQ+ transitional aged youth (TAY), the department provides culturally responsive services to empower youth toward their mental health, harm reduction, and wellness goals while decreasing the negative impacts of trauma and homelessness. The Wellness Department also provides consultation, trainings, and care coordination to deepen staff use of best practices across Larkin Street.

Responsibilities

  • Provide mentoring and guidance to the Wellness Team, including clinical and/or administrative supervision to clinical interns, non-clinical staff, and volunteers.
  • Support the Director with daily program operations, such as triaging waitlists, updating resource guides, distributing newsletters, managing gift card reconciliations, maintaining harm reduction kits, conducting clinical chart reviews, and ensuring quality assurance.
  • Maintain a caseload of up to 12 ongoing individual therapy clients while supporting drop-in counseling and waitlist outreach for youth in various Larkin Street programs, including engagement centers, transitional housing, shelter, and permanent supportive housing.
  • Conduct clinical assessments, individual and group psychotherapy, treatment planning, crisis intervention, de-escalation, and linkage to resources within Larkin Street and the community.
  • Co-facilitate 1-2 weekly psychoeducational groups/workshops (e.g., Crash Out, Risky Business, Real Talk, Seeking Safety) and develop new groups based on youth interests.
  • Utilize diverse therapeutic modalities to provide in-person and virtual mental health/substance use counseling.
  • Lead the organization of Wellness Department events (e.g., Mental Health Awareness Day, Empowering Young Men of Color Conference, Suicide Prevention Month, Overdose Awareness Month).
  • Complete and maintain clinical documentation in EHR databases (no Medi-Cal billing required).
  • Provide clinical consultation and training to staff across Larkin Street on best practices for working with TAY of diverse identities and experiences, including at collaborative meetings and cross-departmental gatherings.
  • Facilitate and coordinate Collaborative Case Conferences to develop care plans for clients with clinical concerns.
  • Travel independently to Larkin Street’s program sites and partner agencies via public transportation or rideshare.
  • Attend weekly individual/group supervision, clinical consultation, and professional development opportunities.
  • Promote Wellness program services across Larkin Street and participate in agency-wide cultural events, stakeholder meetings, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
  • Exercise discretion and professional judgment in all responsibilities, prioritizing the care and welfare of youth served.
  • Assist with special projects and other assignments as requested by leadership.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Social Welfare, or a closely related field.
  • 2+ years of post-Master’s experience preferred; registration with the BBS (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire) as an Associate Clinical Social Worker, Associate Marriage and Family Therapist, or Associate Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, or current CA licensure.
  • Experience providing mental health services in a social service setting, including individual/group therapy, preferably with TAY and unhoused/marginally housed individuals with mild to moderate mental health/substance use challenges.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for engaging diverse audiences.
  • Lived expertise relevant to BIPOC and/or LGBTQ+ TAY; bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail, customer service, and follow-through skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to multi-task, manage priorities, and take initiative in a hybrid, mostly on-site work environment.
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays.
