About the Role
As the Lead System Protection Engineer, you will act as a technical leader responsible for the full scope of design, development, and implementation of protective relay settings and coordination studies. You will plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate detailed phases of assigned project work.
Responsibilities
- Perform short-circuit and symmetrical component analysis, time-current coordination, step-distance coordination, relay settings development and coordination.
- Develop test plans, provide commissioning assistance, and conduct protection system event analysis and troubleshooting.
- Develop NERC PRC compliance reports.
- Design protection schemes for transmission, distribution, generation, and renewable energy sources.
- Provide technical guidance to other engineers.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET accredited program or equivalent).
- PE License required or ability to obtain within 1 year of start date.
- Minimum of 7-9 years of relevant experience.
- Proven experience in system modeling and fault analysis software (ASPEN, CAPE, ETAP, or EasyPower).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Software Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access).
- Strong knowledge in system modeling, relay coordination studies, and development of protective relay settings for systems ranging from 12.47 kV to 345 kV (experience with 500 kV and 765 kV systems is a plus).
- Experience applying protection system engineering practices in one or more of the following areas: transmission line, bus, transformer, capacitor bank, reactor bank, feeder, generator, motor, and communication-assisted protection schemes.
- Familiarity with NERC PRC standards for compliance.
- Must have permanent authorization to work in the US.
- Must have a valid driver’s license or ability to obtain prior to starting date.
- Willing to travel 10-20% of the year.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Engineering.
- Experience with Mathcad.
- On-site commissioning, relay testing, and/or construction support.
- IEEE Power System Relaying and Control Committee membership.
- Proficiency with substation protection and control design and industry standards.
- Ability to review and produce design drawings, including one-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel elevations.
- Capability in substation SCADA, communications, and network engineering.
- Knowledge of substation electrical physical (apparatus) equipment.
- Knowledge of National Electrical Code (NEC).

Pay
Target base compensation range for this role is $126,400 - $164,300.
